At the age of 11, Mr. Packwood read in Jet Magazine the story of Emmett Till, a child only a few years his senior, which truly touched him. Emmett Till was a black child from Chicago who never returned home after being murdered in Mississippi and became a posthumous icon of the Civil Rights Movement. Even as a child, Mr. Packwood was devastated by his story and was inspired to become a lawyer in order to be part of the positive changes he wanted to see more of in the world.
After becoming valedictorian of his high school class, Mr. Packwood received scholarships to attain his undergraduate degree and attend law school before joining the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) as an attorney. From 1970 until 2002, he excelled with the EEOC as an Attorney Advisor, Investigative Supervisor, Area Office Director, and Deputy District Director. Today he excels in private practice as owner of the eponymous law firm, J. D. Packwood, Jr., Attorney-at-Law. Since establishing the practice in 2004, Mr. Packwood has represented clients in civil, family, contract, employment and labor, business and criminal defense law cases.
In the mid-1960s, Mr. Packwood earned a Bachelor of Arts in Government at Louisiana State University in New Orleans. Three years later, he graduated with a Juris Doctor degree from Howard University School of Law. Subsequently, he was admitted to practice law through the Florida State Bar, District of Columbia Bar, Virginia State Bar, and Nebraska State Bar associations. In 2018, Mr. Packwood earned a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies from Conservative Theological University and now also faithfully serves as an ordained minister. Aside from the strong "I can" attitude instilled by his fiercely independent Mom, Celestine, he attributes his continued success to God, his supportive siblings, and loving wife, Annette.
Dedicated to the betterment of his community, Mr. Packwood contributes to those in need as a volunteer speaker as well as through financial contributions and frequent pro bono work. In addition to his legal expertise, he is an avid poet who wrote a collection of poems, "Born to Write" in 1996.
