William Henry Raye Jr. Posthumously Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

William Henry Raye Jr. is fondly remembered as a doting family man, distinguished finance professional, and a dedicated community leader.

    SHERBORN, MA, October 24, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present William Henry Raye Jr. with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Raye celebrated many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he accrued in his field. With many years of professional experience, Mr. Raye was an accomplished banker who spent most of his career with the Bank of Boston. A graduate of Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts, B.A., 1932 and Harvard Business School, M.B.A., 1934, he worked for Remington Rand Corp. from 1934-1936 and as comptroller for Foster Grant from 1936-1941. Joining the First National Bank of Boston (later Bank of Boston) in 1941, he was a senior vice-president in the Credit-Loan Division from 1966 until his retirement.

Under his supervision, the First played a leading role in financing Israel's important Jewish Agency for over fifteen years Mr. Raye served on the executive committee for the National Conference of Christians and Jews (now the National Conference for Community and Justice). He was especially proud to have been a member of the seventh Banker's Study Mission to Israel in September 1962, studying American philanthropic funds made through the United Jewish appeal and to provide a study of general economic development in that country. It was while on this trip he had the honor of carrying a private message from Richard Cardinal Cushing in Boston to Cardinal József Mindszenty, then under political asylum in the American Embassy in Budapest where he was a virtual prisoner.

In addition to his banking career, Mr. Raye was involved with a number of other professional endeavors. He was a trustee of the Newton Savings Bank, a member of the Corporation of Northeastern University, Executive Gifts Chairman and later co-chair of the Advanced Gifts Department, Greater Boston United Fund Campaign, Large Firms and Executive Gifts Division. Additionally, he was a director of numerous companies including Allied American Mutual Fire Insurance Co., the American Mutual Liability Co., Foster Grant, the National Research Corporation, the First Small Investment Corp. of New England, the Saco-Lowell Shops, Cramer Electronics Inc., the Newton-Wellesley Hospital, and the Douglas A. Thom Clinic for Children.

Born to William Henry Raye and Clara Field Capen in Boston on September 12, 1911, Mr. Raye married Janet Bulkley, June 15, 1936, the first couple married in Johnson Chapel, Amherst College. They were the parents of two daughters, Chuckie Raye Blaney and Polly Raye Christmas and eight grandchildren: John Grant Rahill, Will Rahill, Hannah Rahill, David Blaney, Beverly Blaney, Jeffrey Blaney, Megan Blaney and Janet Blaney. He wrote the book, "Nana & Grandad" for his grandchildren. Mr. Raye died in Taos, New Mexico in November 1993.

The Rayes lived in Lunenburg, Mass. (1936-1941), Waban, Mass. (1941-1965) and Dover, Mass. (1965-1983). Mr. Raye had a lifelong love of sailing and the ocean, especially in Maine and on Cape Cod, and participated in the Halifax race several times. He moved to Falmouth, Mass. following Mrs. Raye's death. He is fondly remembered as a doting family man, distinguished finance professional, and a dedicated community leader.
