Dr. Khondker joined Arcadis U.S. Inc. in New York as senior vice president and national technology director for water management in 2013. Boasting extensive expertise in technical leadership in hydraulics, flood mitigation and resiliency engineering, infrastructure, transit, power engineering, and geotechnical and civil engineering aspects of water resources engineering. He is also very proficient in project management, program development, interagency co-ordination and administration. A leading pure play global engineering and consultancy firm, Arcadis provides consultancy, design, engineering and management services for infrastructure, water, environment and buildings. A world-renowned engineer of more than 50 years, Dr. Khondker has served as adjunct lecturer at the New York University Tandon School of Engineering in 1982.

Beginning his career in 1968 as an assistant engineer with the Bangladesh Water Development Board in Dhaka, Dr. Khondker subsequently relocated to the United States in 1973, landing a position as the associate engineer at Ebasco. Ebasco was chronologically acquired by ENSEARCH, Raytheon Engineers and Constructors and finally Washington Group International, where he remained for nearly 30 years. He quickly climbed up the corporate ladder and became department head in 1993. From 1993 to 2001 Dr. Khondker served as department head at Raytheon Engineers and Constructors, a 20,000-employee firm. During this time Dr. Khondker's expertise has been sought worldwide for troubleshooting, consulting, and value engineering assignments. His foreign assignments included Saudi Arabia, Taipei, Taiwan, Mexico, Egypt, Grenoble and Paris, France, Fuzhou, China, Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, and to Vancouver, Canada.

He then joined STV Inc. in New York as department head and chief engineer. Dr. Khondker is a world-renowned hydraulic engineer and best known for power plant cooling water system design and construction. His reputation brought a high-level team from South Korea in October 2001, seeking help in the design and construction of submerged ocean intake and discharge structures for the Wolfsong nuclear power plants, the largest in the world.

He then spent another 9 years in New York, with Dewberry Engineers Inc., where he managed several large projects for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, the New York City Transit Authority, Metro North Railroad and New York City Parks Department. Dr. Khondker received the most prestigious "Best of 2010 Award" by McGraw Hill and New York Construction for Parks Department's Harlem River Seawall, a flood mitigation project.

Involved in various community affairs, Dr. Khondker served as chief engineer and an executive member for the construction of the Jamaica Muslim Center; chairman, board of trustee of the Long Island Muslim Society and president of the Bangladesh American Public Affairs Front. He formerly served as Organizing Secretary for the Water and Power Development Authority Engineer's Association in Dhaka.

Widely published, Dr. Khondker has contributed to multiple book chapters as editor, author and co-author, including for the 2013 book "Technology and Infrastructure Improvements in Bangladesh". He has also contributed numerous articles to various professional journals and has served as both a contributor and presenter of technical papers and presentations throughout his career.

Studying in his native country, Dr. Khondker first earned a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 1967. He later acquired a Master of Science in hydraulic engineering at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands in 1973 and a Doctor of Philosophy in civil engineering at the New York University Tandon School of Engineering in 1982. He is a registered professional engineer in Maryland and New York and is a grade IX/US engineer through the American Society of Civil Engineers. In 2010, Dr. Khondker was named Diplomate, Water Resources Engineers (D.WRE) of the American Academy of Water Resources Engineers for his outstanding contributions to the field of water resources engineering.

An elected Fellow and Life Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Dr. Khondker is also associated with several other industry-related organizations. Some of these include the Environmental and Water Resources Institute and the International Society for Environmental Geotechnology. He is the Founding President of the Tristate Chapter of the American Association of Bangladeshi Engineers and Architects and an adjunct member of the New York Academy of Sciences, the International Association of Hydraulic Research and the International Water Resources Association.

Dr. Khondker was the recipient of a 25-Year distinguished service award, granted by Raytheon Engineers and Constructors Inc. in 1998. Throughout his career, he has also been honored with multiple other awards and recognitions for his contributions in his community and beyond. In 2007, he received an Our Pride Award and, in 1994, received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Bangladeshi American Public Affairs Front.

In 2006, Dr. Khondker received recognition for outstanding services as the seventh President of the Organization from the American Association of Bangladeshi Engineers and Architects. As President, he established "Bangladesh Scholarship" at Lehigh University in memory of world-renowned engineer Dr. F R Khan and two other scholarships at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka. Further, in 2005 he was honored with a certificate of merit for outstanding community service from the New York State Assembly and presented by the Hon. McLaughlin. In 2005, he received US Congressional recognition for over 30 years of outstanding achievements in engineering and science, presented by Hon. Congressman Joseph Crowley, Chairman Bangladesh Caucus. He serves as an expert panelist on flood issues in South Asia for the Voice of America, a radio program sponsored by the US State Department. He is currently serving as an advisor to Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission for review and design of the 1st Nuclear Power Plant in Bangladesh.

Despite his outstanding achievements in the United States, Dr Khondker did not forget his roots. The Khondker Family established a high school and a mosque in their village. Dr Khondker created a trust fund to offer scholarships every year to needy 200 students and another trust fund to pay salaries for the Imam and Moazzem of the mosque. In addition, he supports many NGOs such as Distressed Children International, Volunteer Association of Bangladesh and Computer Literary Program in Bangladesh.

A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
