With more than 50 years of experience to his credit, James H. Alston has excelled as the owner and the chief executive officer of McCall's Bronxwood Funeral Home, his family's business in the Bronx, New York, since 2005. A lawyer, admitted to practice in 1966, he serviced McCall's Bronxwood in various capacities during those earlier years.
Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Alston pursued an education at New York University, earning a bachelor of science in economics in 1962. He concluded his studies at Howard University School of Law in 1965 graduating with a Juris Doctor.
Mr. Alston has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. Previously, he contributed to the Metropolitan College of New York, formally known as Audrey Cohen College, as a trustee. He further held the position of the president of the DeWitt Clinton High School Alumni Association and the chairperson of the Barbara M. Simpson Memorial Fund, which has provided more than 20 $1000 scholarships to young adults with aspirations of seeking a career in literature or "stem" courses. Mr. Alston found success with his legal obligations as well, having been active as a Law Secretary for the New York City Civil Court and an Assistant District Attorney for the Bronx.
In addition to his primary vocation, Mr. Alston remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. A Gold Lifetime Member of the NAACP, he has maintained his involvement with the Northeast Bronx Child Care Centers, the Williamsbridge NAACP Child Care Center, and the Thruway Homeowners Association. Furthermore, Mr. Alston is a member of the New York State Bar Association and the Federal Bar Association.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. Alston has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. A fellow of the American Bar Association Foundation, he was recognized as a community honoree of the New York chapter for the Mico Old Students Association, Inc. and a honoree of the Lehman College's Urban Male Leadership Program. He was additionally presented with the Businessman of the Year Award from Macedonia Baptist Church, the International Excellence Award in Scholarship Support from NANBPWC, the International Lawyers Award from Manila College of Law, the "Take It To The Hill" Award from the Harriet Tubman Humanitarian Achievement Awards Jubilee, Inc., and the Distinguished Service Award from the Bronx-Manhattan North Association of Realtors, Inc. Receiving myriad tributes from Congressmen, Senators, Assemblymen, and Councilmen, Mr. Alston accepted the Joseph L. Galiber Award from the New York State Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators and a Community Service Award from the 47th Precinct Community Council.
Successful in a number of environments in which it is difficult to find a career, Mr. Alston attributes his success to his continuous and unrelenting work ethic. Moreover, he formerly flourished as the vice president and counsel for the American Express Company, the owner of the 22 West Restaurant, and the owner of the A&S Carriage Service. Welcoming four sons and two grandsons into his wonderful family, Mr. Alston has established himself as a philanthropist as well, raising tens of thousands of dollars for scholarships at the McCall's Bronxwood 50th Anniversary Gala and organizing a free holiday event that garners toys and contributions for the United Negro College Fund for more than 20 years.
