Haro Kagemoto recently retired in 2017 from San Francisco State University after 28 years of service.

A photographer and printmaker for more than five decades, Mr. Kagemoto, who grew up in Hawaii, first discovered the black-and-white photograph and darkroom techniques in high school. Earning his first job in the field with Technicolor, Inc., in the Kodachrome processing department, he later worked in commercial black and white and color film processing, darkroom custom mural printing and as a freelance photographer. In 1972 he completed additional coursework in camera and darkroom techniques, and earned certification from The School of Modem Photography in New Jersey. He later studied lithography with Ron Kraver and intaglio etching with Edward Stasack at the University of Hawaii. He also authored a poetry collection titled, "Orion's Winter" in 1975. He received the Charles Eugene Banks Award in Creative Writing for his short story, "Daruma" in 1976. He taught summer printmaking workshops on a neighboring island in Hawaii, an experience that made him realize he truly enjoyed teaching as well.
In 1977, Mr. Kagemoto resettled in upstate New York to teach printmaking at Communications Village in Kingston. He attended the State University of New York at New Paltz and studied intaglio etching with Benjamin Wigfall and photography with John Seaholm. His early artistic influences included the colorful designs of Peter Max, the expressive photo-etchings of John Morita, the vibrant intaglio etchings of Pat Jow and the insightful black-and-white photographs of Drew Carolan. Mr. Kagemoto edited a video short called "Hendrix Experience" in 1988 and directed video documentaries titled "Visitations" in 1989 and "Ancient Meso-America" in 1990.
Mr. Kagemoto recently retired in 2017 from San Francisco State University after 28 years of service. He taught various printmaking and drawing courses and also served as the assistant director of Procurement and Contracts. He was also a visiting artist at the University of California, Berkeley Extension.
Mr. Kagemoto has held a Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking, with a minor in photography, from the University of Hawaii since 1977 and a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking, with a minor in photography, from the State University of New York at New Paltz since 1979. His thesis exhibition consisted of photo-etchings, intaglio etchings and lithographs from his series, "The Divers" and black-and-photographs from his ongoing series, "Silent Music." Throughout his career, Mr. Kagemoto's artwork has been on display at numerous exhibitions and in many public and private collections throughout the United States. He has held certifications as a California Department of Health lead project manager and was a registered California Notary Public. Married to his wife, artist Patricia Mae Jow since 1991, they have a daughter, Emerald.
A member of the San Francisco Museum of Modem Art, the American Film Institute and Mensa International, Mr. Kagemoto is also a lifetime member of American Mensa and The Institute for Supply Management.
