Involved with the Chicago Community Trust for several years, Dr. Simmons is a distinguished figure in the world of civil service following a career in academia. Beginning her career at Tufts University as an assistant professor from 1969-1972, she also served as the Dean of Jackson College from 1970 to 1972. She later relocated to Princeton University, where she was the Assistant Professor of History and Dean of Student Affairs until 1977. Following this, Dr. Simmons was the President of Hampshire College for over a decade, a position she cites as a highlight of her career. She was the first woman president and one of very few women to head a coeducational college in the United States at the time.

Dr. Simmons served as the President of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation from 1989 to 1999 and then a senior associate for the Center for International Studies at the University of Chicago from 1999 to 2005. Alongside her primary career responsibilities, she served on the Board of Overseers of Harvard University from 1972 to 1978, was a global governance trustee of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching from 1978 to 1986, and the Senior Advisor for Philanthropy for the World Economic Forum. She was also a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Simmons also served on the Board of Directors of Marsh & McLennan Companies, the Shorebank Corporation, was the former chairman of the Fair Labor Association and a senior advisor of the World Economic Forum. She was also active as an advisory committee member of the World Bank Institute and the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, among other corporations.
Equally passionate about civic involvement, Dr. Simmons worked on Mayor Richard Daley's Youth Development Task Force from 1993 to 1995 and the City of Chicago's Climate Action Plan Task Force from 2006-2009. She also served on the President's Commission on Environmental Quality from 1991 – 1992, the President's Commission on World Hunger from 1978 to 1980, the Hague Appeal for Peace from 1999-2008, and the Sustainable Development High Level Advisory Board of the United Nations from 1993-1995.

Dr. Simmons is currently the President of Global Philanthropy Partnership which supports her work with organizations engaged in global issues. She serves on the boards of the Union of Concerned Scientists, the American Prospect, Ceres, Synergos, the Chicago Field Museum of Natural History, the Weil Foundation, the Adlai Stevenson Center, and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. She is affiliated with the Rocky Mountain Institute, ecoAmerica, the Aspen Institute, the Illinois Justice Advisory Board and more.

To prepare for her career, Dr. Simmons pursued a formal education at Harvard University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in social studies, with honors, in 1963. She graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Oxford in 1969. Throughout her career, Dr. Simmons has contributed a myriad of articles on education and public policy. She was a stringer for The New York Times and The Economist in the 1960s, co-authored "Exploitation from 9 to 5: Twentieth Century Fund Task Force Report on Working Women" in 1975, and authored "Modern Mauritius" in 1982.

As a testament to her success and longevity in her field, Dr. Simmons accrued several accolades. In 2004 she was recognized amongst Chicago's 100 Most Influential Women by Crain's Chicago Business. She also received honorary doctorates from Lake Forest College, Amherst College, Franklin Pierce College, the University of Massachusetts, Alverno College, Marlboro College, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, American University, and Tufts University.
