Mr. Rassel attended the University of Notre Dame, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1964. He was then drawn to law and earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Michigan in 1966. He was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 1966 and subsequently admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia Bar, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He served on active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1966 to 1969 with a career terminal rank of lieutenant.

Mr. Rassel joined the law firm of Butzel Long in November 1969, rising to president and chief executive officer in 1994. Mr. Rassel has served as the firm's chairman since 2010. A litigator, he was elected to the American College of Trial Lawyers in 1998.

Mr. Rassel has served as the chairman of numerous civic and charitable organizations, including Detroit Public Television, the Metropolitan Affairs Coalition, and the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce Foundation. He considers his work on guiding and establishing the Rosa Parks Scholarship Foundation, and becoming a personal friend of Mrs. Parks, to be the highlight of his career. He has also served on boards at the University of Michigan Law School, University of Detroit Mercy, and Oakland University.
