Having accrued over 40 years of professional experience to his credit, Mr. Liston has pursued his trade as an attorney in solo practice since 2016. Previously, he found success as a partner with Tyack, Blackmore & Liston from 1993 to 2009, after working as an associate for the firm between 1990 and 1993. He remained with the firm from 2010 to 2015 as it expanded to Tyack, Blackmore, Liston & Nigh. Mr. Liston began his career by working out of a private practice from 1978 until 1984, before joining the attorney bureau of support for the Franklin County Domestic Court from 1984 to 1985. He contributed as a court magistrate for the Franklin County Juvenile Court between 1985 and 1990.
In addition to the previous professional accomplishments, Mr. Liston is a distinguished speaker in the field and was the chairman of the Ohio Public Defender Commission from 2013 to 2016, as well as a member between 2006 and 2013. He has served on the board of trustees for the Juvenile Justice Coalition and the advisory board for the Franklin County Juvenile Court. The founding president of the Central Ohio Association of Juvenile Lawyers, Mr. Liston contributed as a member of the government's task force on MR/DD Victims of Crime. He currently serves on the State of Ohio Capital Indigent Commission.
Prior to embarking on his career path, Mr. Liston pursued an education at Otterbein College in Westerville, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1975. He completed additional coursework at the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, from which he earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1978. He has been admitted to practice law by the Supreme Court of the United States, the U.S. District Court of Ohio in the South District, and the State of Ohio.
Notably, Mr. Liston was recognized as one of the Best Lawyers in American and named an Ohio Super Lawyer. Martindale-Hubbell recently recognized him for 25 consecutive years as an AV Preeminent Lawyer in his field. He is the recipient of an Award of Distinction from the National Juvenile Defender Center and was honored as Attorney of the Year by the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers in 2016. The co-author of "Justice Cut Short: An Assessment of Access to Counsel and Quality of Representation in Delinquency Proceedings in Ohio," Mr. Liston is an active member of the Columbus Bar Association and the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
