Professor Hamid Mowlana has been honored in his home country as an "Eternal One," in honor of his contribution to academia and the scientific community.

Professor Mowlana is a distinguished scholar and a social scientist with more than 50 years of accomplishment in his fields of international relations and communication. His works extend over several disciplines including, economics, political science, sociology, and philosophy. He came to the United States in 1958 under an international educational and cultural program. He completed his undergraduate work with a combination of coursework from the University of Tehran and Northwestern University. Professor Mowlana continued his education at Northwestern University, completing a Master of Science in 1960 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1963. He returned to Tehran and served as the editor-in-chief of Kayhan, a leading Iranian newspaper, but after a short period decided to pursue an academic carrier and returned to the United States by 1964.

From 1965 until 1968, Professor Mowlana served as an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He moved to American University in Washington D.C. in 1968 as an associate professor, rising to the position of a full professor in 1971. Professor Mowlana continued to parley his knowledge at American University until his retirement in 2007, when he was granted emeritus status. He is the founder of the American University's Intercultural and International Communication Studies program, the first in the United States, and served as its director between 1968 and 2005.

Professor Mowlana has been a visiting professor at many universities globally. Among many other accolades, he has been honored in his home country as an "Eternal One," in honor of his contribution to academia and the scientific community. Professor Mowlana has written and edited more than 40 books and more than 1,200 journal articles and essays in several languages, including "The Passing of Modernity," in 1992, and "Global Communication in Transition," in 1997. He has received many national and international awards including The International Studies Association's Distinguished Senior Scholar award, The International Communication Association's award for outstanding research and the American University's Scholar/ Teacher of the Year award for his distinguished leadership and scholarship. Professor Mowlana served as president of the International Association for Media and Communication Research between 1994 and 1998 and is now an honorary president of that association.

In civic endeavors, Professor Mowlana has undertaken numerous research projects on behalf of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO,) as well as the United National Development Program in New York. As a professor emeritus, he has been active in writing, publishing, and lecturing around the world.
