Dr. Burke is a professor emeritus of humanities who taught at Elgin Community College for 23 years, achieving professor emeritus status in June 2017. He served as a co-creator of the Humanities Center, the first faculty director of the Center, a member of the global and international studies task force steering committee and the global and international studies task force. Further, he continued his career as the co-chair of the study abroad and faculty exchange. He taught courses in Western and Asian philosophies, religious studies, and global studies. Previously, he taught as an instructor or lecturer at the University of Minnesota, Normandale Community College, and Eastern Connecticut State University.

An alumnus of the University of Minnesota, Dr. Burke studied philosophy, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in 1967 and a Master of Arts in South Asian Studies in 1978. He subsequently completed doctoral-level course work in South Asian Languages and Literatures, studying Hindu, Urdu and Sanskrit with emphasis on the Indian origins of Hinduism and Buddhism. He received his Ph.D. in 1989. He was awarded numerous fellowships as a graduate student, including a Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowship by the U.S. government to study in India. He was active with the Minnesota Consortium for South Asian Studies, serving at various times as a board member, director, assistant director and news editor.

A seasoned researcher, Dr. Burke has devoted a great deal of time studying 11th century Indian philosophical texts. He has presented articles at professional conferences, has been published in Philosophy East and West, and contributed a book chapter in a 100th birthday felicitation volume on Radhakrishnan's philosophy. He also served as Managing Editor of South Asia in Review.

Dr. Burke has held memberships in the American Philosophical Association, the Association for Asian Studies, the Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy, the American Academy of Religion, and the International Society for the Comparative Study of Civilizations. He holds Lifetime Memberships in the Asiatic Society in Kolkata, as well as the University of Minnesota Alumni Association.

While at Elgin Community College, Dr. Burke received a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to travel to India and China on several occasions in order to develop overseas studies opportunities for faculty and students. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Burke has been featured in the 65th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America.
