James Bidgood Celebrated for Accomplishments in the Fields of Government Contracts and Construction Law

Bidgood, Jr. has been included in Marquis Who's Who in recognition of his accomplishments in the fields of Government contract law and construction litigation. Concentrating his law practice in construction litigation and government contracts at Smith, Currie & Hancock since 1983, Mr. Bidgood has excelled in his representation of clients involved in the construction industry. Over the years, Mr. Bidgood has represented clients in construction claims and disputes involving projects such as high-rise office towers, rapid transit rail and station projects, highway design and construction projects, petrochemical and other industrial plants, chemical manufacturing facilities, port facilities, shopping centers, environmental remediation, and a plethora of military construction projects. His clientele includes construction owners, contractors and subcontractors, specialty suppliers, designers, and surety companies, which he has represented in negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and litigation throughout the United States. Mr. Bidgood is a member of the Georgia Bar and is admitted to practice at the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, and the United States Court of Federal Claims.

Based on his extensive experience, Mr. Bidgood has written and lectured extensively on all aspects of the construction industry. Mr. Bidgood was Regional Coordinator in the publication of STATE PUBLIC CONSTRUCTION LAW SOURCE BOOK (CCH 2002), and he has been a contributing author for Smith, Currie & Hancock's COMMON SENSE CONSTRUCTION LAW (now in its sixth edition). Other publications have included "Contract's Notice Provision Bars Claim for Extra Work," "Why Contemporaneous Project Scheduling Is Important," "Forum-Clauses – Still Enforceable?" "Defective Product Insurance Claims," "Hidden Legal Risks of Green Building," and "Cutting The Knot on Concurrent Delay." Mr. Bidgood has lectured throughout the country in various aspects of construction and government contract law, for both public audiences and private clients.

Mr. Bidgood earned a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from The Georgia Institute of Technology in 1974. He continued his studies, earning a Master of Business Administration at Phillips University in 1980. Mr. Bidgood graduated from Emory University School of Law with a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1983, with honors, where he was a member of the Board of Editors for the Emory Law Journal and a member of the Order of the Coif honorary society. Prior to entering law school, Mr. Bidgood served as a captain and a pilot in the United States Air Force from 1974 to 1980.

Mr. Bidgood's accomplishments have been widely recognized in the legal profession. In 2019, he was invited to become a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, an honor reserved for 1% of jurists in any jurisdiction. In 2019, Mr. Bidgood was recognized by Best Lawyers as Lawyer of the Year in Construction Litigation. In 2017, Mr. Bidgood was recognized as Lawyer of the Year in Construction Law. He has been included in The Best Lawyers in America since 2007. Mr. Bidgood has been recognized as a Georgia Super Lawyer each year from 2005 through the present. He has been recognized by his peers and members of the judiciary with Martindale Hubbell's Judicial AV Preeminent Rating, the highest possible rating in both legal ability and ethical standards.

Mr. Bidgood is an arbitrator on the American Arbitration Association's National Panel of Neutrals. He intends to continue to serve the construction industry as an arbitrator following his retirement from law practice.
