Dr. Danielle Dick aims to obtain grants and write scientific publications, as well as focus on how research is given back to the public.

An acclaimed researcher and educator with an interest in substance abuse and mental health outcomes in youth and young adults, Dr. Dick holds the title of distinguished Commonwealth Professor of psychology and human and molecular genetics at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). At VCU, she manages a large longitudinal project called "Spit for Science," where they have enrolled more than 12,000 VCU students to study risk and protective factors for substance use and emotional health outcomes across the college years and beyond. Dr. Dick directs an interdisciplinary institute focused on promoting behavioral and emotional health through the integration of research with coursework, programming and policy.
Furthermore, Dr. Dick maintains her research interest in how genetic and environmental influences contribute to the development of patterns of substance abuse and related behaviors, such as child conduct problems and depression and how they can use that information to inform prevention and intervention. She began her career in the field as an assistant professor for Washington University in Saint Louis. Dr. Dick is affiliated with the Behavior Genetics Association, the Research Society of Alcoholism and the International Society of Psychiatric Genetics, from which she received the Theodore Reich Award and the Richard Todd Award in Child Psychiatry.
Prior to embarking upon her professional path, Dr. Dick earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology and biology from the University of Virginia in 1997. Four years later, she graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in clinical psychology at Indiana University. Due to her professional accomplishments, Dr. Dick was presented with a Young Alumni Award from Indiana University. She has also won the Young Investigator Award from the Research Society of Alcoholism, and the Thompson Award, Fulker Award, and Fuller & Scott Award from the Behavior Genetics Association. Most recently, she was celebrated for Outstanding Contributions to Recovery Research by the Association of Recovery Schools.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Dick intends to remain in academia and continue to run her research institute. She aims to obtain grants and write scientific publications, as well as focus on how research is given back to the public. Apart from her work with the research institute, she wants to conduct more outreach work and write a series of books to bring the science of behavior genetics to parents and the general public.
