A former educator, Mr. Rea taught chemistry in the Omaha Public Schools for over 30 years before retiring in 2000. In addition to teaching, he served as a consultant for Kiewit Construction in Omaha and as a planner assistant for the Waccamaw Regional Planning Center in Georgetown, South Carolina. He worked as a driving instructor at Dual Systems Driving School in Omaha, and wrote computer software for Charles E. Merrill Publishing Company in Columbus, Ohio.
Mr. Rea's career led him to become involved with numerous professional organizations. He served as trustee and vice chair for both the Omaha School Employees' Retirement System and the Nebraska Public Employees Retirement System, and was Chairman of the Nebraska Professional Practices Commission. Mr. Rea was a reviewer of articles for the Journal of Chemical Education as well as an author of articles for the Journal. He wrote the chapter on the science museums of Eastern Europe for "Science History: A Traveler's Guide." He was on the American Chemical Society High School Chemistry Examinations Committee for 20 years, and served as chief editor and Chairman for the Exams Committee. Mr. Rea served on the Board of Directors for First Nebraska Credit Union for 40 years, including multiple terms as treasurer and Chairman of the Board. He was also a Neighborhood Commissioner for the Boys Scouts of America, Mid-America Council. He has written and edited the newsletters for various organizations for more than 20 years.
An alumnus of Kansas State University, Mr. Rea received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1966, and holds a Master of Natural Science in Chemistry from the University of South Dakota (1973). Moreover, Mr. Rea holds a lifetime teaching certificate from the state of Nebraska.
Among other industry-related organizations, Mr. Rea is a lifetime member of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and has been a member of the National Science Teachers Association, the American Chemical Society, the National Education Association, and the Nebraska State Education Association. He was a member of the Omaha Education Association and served as president of that organization. He is currently a member of the Nebraska State Education Association-Retired, and has served as both President and Vice President for NSEA-Retired. In 1983, Mr. Rea organized and conducted a drive-in workshop in Omaha for the National Science Teachers Association, and was on the Planning Committee for the 1996 NSTA National Convention in Kansas City.
Mr. Rea has received many awards and recognitions for his contributions. In 1981 he was awarded a Cooper Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 1985 he was presented with a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching. Mr. Rea was recognized by the Nebraska Department of Education as the 1989 Nebraska Teacher of the Year. He received the School Bell Award from the Omaha Education Association in 2005 for distinguished service to public education, and was awarded the Big Apple Award from the Nebraska Association of Retired School Personnel in 2014. Mr. Rea was recognized as the Omaha Northwest High School Teacher of the Year in 1981, and was inducted into the Northwest High School Hall of Fame in 2010. Mr. Rea enjoys travel, and has visited more than 40 countries across six continents.
The welfare of active and retired school employees has been a focus for Mr. Rea for more than 30 years. He helped organize and served on the Board of Directors for the Educators Health Alliance (which provides health insurance to 95% of the public school employees in Nebraska). Mr. Rea was passionate about assisting teachers in navigating the complexities of post-retirement health insurance and Medicare. To that end, he wrote and presented workshops to help educators better understand their retirement benefits prior to the time that they retired. He is responsible for hosting more than 350 seminars on these topics to an audience of more than 14,000 educators and spouses over the last thirty years.
Retirement security is one of Mr. Rea's passions. Since retiring from teaching, he has devoted a substantial amount of time to that topic, serving for twelve years on the Executive Committee of the National Council on Teacher Retirement, including one year as NCTR President. He has also served on the Board of Directors for the National Institute on Retirement Security, and as a consultant for the National Conference on Public Employee Retirement Systems.
In 1985 Mr. Rea was selected as one of two Nebraska finalists for the NASA Teacher in Space Project, and received training from NASA prior to the launch of the Shuttle Challenger. After the Challenger explosion, Nebraska established a Nebraska Christa McAuliffe Prize to recognize Nebraska educators who exhibit courage and excellence in education. Mr. Rea served on the Selection Committee for the Nebraska Christa McAuliffe Prize for twenty-five years. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Rea has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the Midwest.
