James Schenck Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Construction Law

An acclaimed attorney and North Carolina native, Mr. Schenck currently works with Conner Gwyn Schenck PLLC, where he focuses on state and local government construction projects and a variety of construction claims. A large portion of his work involves dispute resolution, including negotiation, mediation, arbitration and litigation. Previously, he worked as the president of the National Institute of Construction Law, Inc. between 1980 and 1999. Earlier, he gained valuable industry experience as an attorney with Patton Boggs LLP from 1988 to 1998.Mr. Schenck began his career in the field with Foster Conner Robson & Gumbiner during the mid-1980s.

Backed by his extensive expertise in law, Mr. Schenck has contributed his knowledge to several articles and publications, including "Liability for Construction Defects That Result From Multiple Causes," "The Design/Build Deskbook: A Blueprint for Design-Build Procurement Across the United States and Canada," "Construction and Design Law" and "North Carolina Construction Law Survey I and II." In a solo capacity, he authored "Termination for Convenience," "Contracts that Violate Law or Public Policy" and "Impossibility, Impracticability and Frustration of Purpose" through Construction Law Adviser. Mr. Schenck retains his professional alignment with the American Bar Association's Forum on Construction Law, Law Practice Division and Dispute Resolution Section, as well as the American College of Construction Lawyers, the North Carolina Academy of Superior Court Mediators, the Wake County Bar Associations and the Construction Professionals Network of North Carolina.

Prior to embarking upon his professional path, Mr. Schenck earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1976. Subsequently, he obtained a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the aforementioned university before graduating with a Master of Arts in public policy from Duke University in 1982. He has been admitted to practice law by the North Carolina State Bar, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the U.S. District Court for the Middle, Western and Eastern Districts of North Carolina. Over the years, Mr. Schenck has also remained certified as a mediator through the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission for North Carolina Superior Courts, the American Arbitration Association's Panel of Construction Mediators, and the U.S. District Courts of the Middle and Eastern Districts of North Carolina.

Due to his dedicated work in the field, Mr. Schenck has been consistently honored as an AV Peer Review Rated Attorney through Martindale-Hubbell. Since the mid-2000s, he has also been recognized as a Best Lawyer in American for Construction Law, a North Carolina Super Lawyer in Construction/Surety Law and among the Top 100 North Carolina Lawyers by Charlotte Magazine.
