Born in Karachi, Pakistan, Dr. Rangwala pursued a formal education at NED University of Engineering and Technology and earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (BEE) degree in 1973. Upon relocating to the United States in 1973, he received a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering and computer sciences (EECS) from the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) in 1975. He later received a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Santa Clara University in 1979. Recently, Dr. Rangwala received a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree from Walden University in 2018.

At the start of his career, Dr. Rangwala served as an Assistant Professor at NED University. While pursuing his master's degree, he taught as a graduate student instructor (GSI) and substitute lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley. Thereafter, he worked as a design engineer for Signetics Corp. in Sunnyvale, CA for two years, before joining Data General in Sunnyvale as a design manager. In 1981, Raytheon hired him in its semiconductor division in Mountain View, CA, working initially as computer-aided design and applications manager, and then as product line manager. Dr. Rangwala worked at Raytheon until 1989.

He served as the president and chief executive officer and major equity holder of Semi-Custom Logic (SLI), in San Jose, CA from 1989 to 1999. During his tenure with SLI, Dr. Rangwala oversaw business expansion into the commercial and defense sectors with concurrent growth in team and revenue. He and his SLI partners collaborated with the founders of Exodus Corporation to create the seminal business of web hosting in 1996. Exodus had a successful initial public offering in 1998. The owners of SLI founded VPNet Incorporated in 1995, on the innovative concept of "virtual private networking" as a business model. Avaya Corporation purchased VPNet in 2001.

Dr. Rangwala's other technology entrepreneurial ventures include Infonox, Neural ID, Dixiyan, and Zoom Diversified between 1999 and 2011. During this time, he served as a director of sales operations for PDF Solutions in San Jose from 2004 to 2007 and as vice president of operations for Zoom Diversified from 2007 to 2010. Currently, he consults in technology entrepreneurship, leadership guidance, and program management and serves as a part-time project director at KLM Capital Group.

The two significant highlights of Dr. Rangwala's career are: his parents attending his graduation as a valedictorian at NED Engineering University in 1973; and his wife, children, and grandchildren attending his doctoral convocation in 2018. He feels honored to have been selected as an outstanding GSI at the University of California, Berkeley and to have found success in his entrepreneurial venture investments, notably Exodus and VPNet. Additional achievements to his credit include a patent for co-inventing a tunable gigahertz all-optical clock generator.
