Dr. Nam is a polymer engineer with more than 40 years of expertise in his field. Inspired by his father, also a chemical engineer, Dr. Nam attended Seoul National University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in applied chemistry in 1971. He subsequently attended Oregon State University, obtaining a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1975, after which he attained a Master of Science in engineering in materials and metallurgical engineering from the University of Michigan in 1978. Dr. Nam concluded his academic efforts with a Doctor of Philosophy in polymer engineering from the University of Tennessee in 1982.
Dr. Nam began his career as a teaching and research assistant based at the University of Oregon from 1973 to 1975, the University of Michigan from 1975 until 1978, and the University of Tennessee between 1979 and 1982. In 1982, he joined 3M Corporation in Saint Paul as a senior engineer, rising to become a research specialist from 1987 to 2001. In 2002, he continued his career as an advanced research specialist, and a senior research specialist in 2010. Dr. Nam later served as a corporate rheologist for 3M Corporation from 2012 to 2017. Since 2017, he has garnered a laudable reputation as the senior vice president of Bushitol Corp.
Since 2001, Dr. Nam has maintained activity as a strategic technical advisor for Rheosense, Incorporated. He holds 12 patents in his field, and has contributed 25 articles to professional journals. He was a Chairperson of Board and is an executive councilor of the Korean American Association of Minnesota, and an elder of the Korean Presbyterian Church of Minnesota, with which he has been active since 1989. Dr. Nam is likewise a member of the Society of International Polymer Processing, and a senior member of the Society of Plastics Engineers and served as a Midwest Representative of the National Unification Advisory Councils for Korea.
