Winnie Givot became a skilled watercolor artist not because she went to art school or even took art classes in college (Wheaton College, MA 1963-1967), but because of her passion for painting, which she recognized at the age of 47. She knows now that she had always been an artist, expressing it in many ways, including silversmithing (1972-1976 New Mexico) creating beautiful gardens, gourmet cooking both for her family and up to 150 people, acting as well as creating sets and costumes for plays, operas and other presentations (Two Rivers Farm, Aurora, OR, 1976-1992). During this time she also studied drawing with book illustrator, Nonny Hogrogian, sculpted in sandstone and experimented with watercolor. In 1992 she began taking Continuing Education watercolor classes in Canby, OR. Then later that year a move from the Willamette Valley (Oregon) to Central Oregon changed her life.
At that time her children were in middle and high school. With the move her responsibilities as a Chiropractic Assistant to her husband became much less, all her volunteer commitments ended and instead of taking on more, she began to study painting in earnest. Fortunately there was an artist's studio in the barn on the family property. If she was not helping her husband with his practice or caring for her family, that is where she could be found, painting, painting, painting, experimenting, practicing and learning.
Winnie Givot took all available drawing and watercolor classes, read many art books and magazines, took as many Art in the Mountains workshops as she could and painted, developing her skills and finding answers to her questions. Art in the Mountains brings internationally known art instructors to Bend, Oregon, close to her home. Winnie Givot studied with many of these instructors both in Oregon and abroad, some of whom were Harley Brown, William Herring, Jan Kunz, Frank Webb, Judy Morris, and Judy Hoiness. She was a workshop assistant for Art in the Mountains between 1996 and 2001.
She has been teaching classes and summer workshops at her Barn Studio and Gallery near Sisters, OR since 1996 as well as at other locations in Oregon and Pennsylvania. Teaching watercolor came naturally to Winnie Givot. She was able to see which techniques worked and which did not and was able to show that to students. She had recently been a student herself and knew what helped her painting; so she was able to show her students how to handle the fluid medium of watercolor.
She also recognized that every student came with fear, fear of not being good enough, of not being able to paint. They came thinking they didn't have the necessary talent. They didn't know that painting, like playing the piano or tennis, is mostly about practice. That how you get good is by doing it. And they had the often unrecognized fear of expressing themselves on paper. Or they had been told in grade school that their art work was bad. And so she also addressed their fears, by reading stories and asking deeper questions, eliciting answers so that everyone recognized their commonality and worth. Then they were able to move past the fear of not succeeding into the joy of the process as she instructed them in a supportive and gentle manner which she continues to this day.
Since 2009 she has been taking students on international painting retreats in Italy, Greece and Mexico. Her next trip will be to Ecuador followed by Portugal in the fall of 2020.
A graduate of Wheaton College in Massachusetts, Ms. Givot earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1967. Furthermore, she completed postgraduate coursework in economics at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, between 1968 and 1970 and worked for the Boston Redevelopment Authority as a research economist from 1968-1971.
In 2000, Ms. Givot presented a painting to the Chilean Congress (for which she received their Congressional Medal), and in 2002 she took 24 paintings to Washington DC which were presented to Congressmen and women as inspiration - that instead of basing decisions on greed and fear, they work to find new responses and solutions for making decisions which honor the highest in ourselves and all others.
A prolific painter over 1000 of her paintings are in collections internationally, a few of which are in those of Pres. & Mrs. Barack Obama, Pres. & Mrs. George W. Bush, Colin Powell, Deepak Chopra, Senator Ron Wyden, United Parcel Service, Colorado College, Harley Brown, Gov. & Mrs. John Kitzhaber and The Congress of Chile. Her paintings have been included in numerous solo and group shows as well as national and international juried exhibitions.
She was a founding partner of Hood Avenue Art Gallery in Sisters, OR from 2014-2019 and continues her affiliation with that gallery today.
Ms. Givot is currently a member of the National Watercolor Society, Northwest Watercolor Society (signature status), Watercolor Society of Oregon (signature status), Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, and Plein Air Painters of Oregon.
An exceptional Marquis listee, she has been selected for inclusion in numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women.
