As a young child, Dr. Ryu was exposed to his future profession through his parents' guidance. His father was one of the early pioneers in the fields of applied microbiology and biochemical engineering in Korea and Asia having served as a Professor at the Yonsei University and as the Bureau Chief of Industry in the Korean government. His mother was a dentist and Dr. Ryu learned from her the importance of healthcare issues to humanity. Upon graduating from Seoul High School and having studied for one year at Seoul National University, he pursued further education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) earning a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering in 1961 and a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemical engineering in 1967. Dr. Ryu began his career as a Senior Research Engineer at the Squibb Institute for Medical Research, Bristol-Myers Squibb in Princeton, New Jersey in 1967. He also served as an Adjunct Professor for the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, until 1972.

After having served briefly as an Associate Professor for the Departments of Chemical Engineering and Applied Biological Science at MIT, Dr. Ryu, served as one of the founding faculty members of the very first research university in Korea, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). He served as Professor and Chairman of the Departments of Chemical Engineering and Biological Science and Engineering, from 1973 to 1982. Simultaneously, he served and contributed as a consultant and advisor to many industrial research laboratories, government organizations, and academic institutions in US, Japan, and Korea such as the United States National Academy of Science Research Associateship at the U.S. Army Natick Research Laboratory, NASA Ames Laboratory, and Distinguished Visiting Professorships at the Texas A & M, SUNY Buffalo, Osaka University, and Seoul National University. Thereafter, Professor Ryu joined the faculty of the College of Engineering as well as the College of Agriculture and Environmental Science, and College of Biological Science at the University of California, Davis as the Maynard Amerine Endowed Chair Professor. There, he served as a faculty member in various capacities for 30 years before retirement. During his tenure at University of California and KAIST, Professor Ryu trained 82 PhD and MS students as well as 32 postdoctoral scientists, and has served as advisor and consultant to many academic institutions and industrial organizations in the US, Germany, France, Korea, and Japan. He has also served the US National Science Foundation as the Program Director for Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology Programs where he developed several innovative new research and development programs in biotechnology.

In 2012, Dr. Ryu was awarded the Fulbright Distinguished Chair Professor Lectureship by the US Department of State and gave a lecture series in biotechnology at Yonsei University, Seoul. The Japan Society of Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the Nara Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), Kyoto, Japan, also invited Prof Ryu as a Distinguished Professor and Advisor to the President for Industry-Government-Academia Programs. Following retirement from the University of California, Dr. Ryu has been advising the new millennial students on various campuses, providing public services to some minority population communities, and working as the President of Dewey Consultants, Inc.

In addition to his primary endeavors in teaching, research, professional and public services, Dr. Ryu has written and published over 220 peer reviewed scientific research publications, more than a dozen book chapters, and developed and holds 16 patents all in the field of biotechnology. He has also given more than 310 lectures and seminars in the field of biotechnology, food science, and pharmaceutical science, all at the invitation of academic institutions, biotechnology industries, private and public research laboratories across US, Europe, and East Asia. Additionally, he has and continue to provide consulting services to more than 18 biotechnology, food, and pharmaceutical industries, academic and research program advisory services to more than 24 universities, and contributed to a myriad of professional organizations including the American Society for Microbiology, American Chemical Society, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, the Japanese Society for Bioscience and Biotechnology, National Institutes of Health, and National Science Foundation, among others.

For his accomplishments in the biotechnology and related field, Dr. Ryu has been the recipient of many honors and accolades. A selected list includes: Special Award for Outstanding Research Achievement from Bristol-Myer Squibb Institute for Medical Research, Special Award for Outstanding Faculty Research and Teaching from Korea Advanced Institute of Science (KAIST), National Order of Civil Merit the Presidential Medal of Honor for Outstanding Scientific Contribution from the President of Korea, Founding Fellow of American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, Member of the National Academy of Science and Engineering in Korea, Ho-Am Award (Premier Global Award from Samsung) for Outstanding Accomplishment in Biomolecular Engineering, International Enzyme Engineering Conferences Award, International Biochemical Engineering Award, Japan Science Promotion Society Senior Fellow Award, Distinguished Chair Professor Fulbright Scholar Award, Special Award for Outstanding Contributions to Korean American Scientist and Engineers Association (KSEA), and many others from the professional societies.
