For more than 55 years, Father Kirby was devoted to ministry, serving throughout the Episcopal Dioceses of Western New York, New Jersey, Western Kansas and Eau Claire. His humble beginnings as an assistant to the rector at the Cathedral of St. Luke and Saint Paul in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1963 eventually led to him serving as the dean and rector of Christ Church Cathedral in Eau Claire, in 1988. As dean, Father Kirby was renowned for his work, leading a resurgence of congregational, spiritual and financial growth until retirement in 2005.

Emphasizing community outreach and partnership throughout his career. Father Kirby's responsibilities within the church included budget and finance responsibilities, ecumenical relations, commission on ministry, long range planning, Christian education and music and liturgy. In retirement, he continued to participate as a pan-time priest of Grace Church on Rice Lake. Until 2018. Father Kirby also served as the chaplain for the Upper Mississippi River Region for the Seamen's Church Institute and the Civil Air Patrol and was the resident director and vice president for development of the Saint Francis Homes in Kansas and New York.

Serving his community, Father Kirby was active as a development consultant for Saint Francis Academy in Salina. Kansas, a national, nonprofit behavioral health care organization serving children, adolescents and their families. He was also a member of the board of directors of Episcopal Relief and Development, a nonprofit international relief and development agency of the Episcopal Church. In 2012, Father Kirby was elected to vice president of the House of Deputies for The General Convention of the Episcopal Church. He also notably served on the disciplinary committee Title IV of the Episcopal Church, was chairman of long-range planning for the Diocese of Eau Claire and a member of numerous committees, including Board Member of the Business lmprovement District of Eau Claire, President of Downtown Eau Claire and other civic duties such as a chaplain for the Eau Claire Police Department.

An alumnus of the University of Richmond, Father Kirby received a Bachelor of Arts in 1960. Shortly thereafter, he acquired a Master of Divinity at General Theological Seminary, New York City, in ]963 and was ordained into the priesthood in the Episcopal Church. In 1963, he married Heather Patricia Roberts of New York City and New Jersey. They have two children, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Father Kirby is an associate of the Community of Saint John Baptist, Mendham, New Jersey and The Anglican Society.

In 2015. Father Kirby was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award from The General Theological Seminary. He was also the recipient of the Bishop's Distinguished Service Award by the Diocese of Western Kansas in 1980. A celebrated Marquis listee, Father Kirby has been included in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Religion and Who's Who in the Midwest.
