With more than 50 years of professional experience to her credit, Dr. Timmermann has focused her career on the field of aging and communications. She was a vice president of MetLife and the founder and executive director of the MetLife Mature Market Institute in Westport, Connecticut and New York City between 1997 and 2013. After retiring from MetLife in 2013, she established a consulting practice to help financial services companies and other businesses reach the 50+ market. In addition, she was appointed a United Nations representative for the International Federation on Ageing, a senior fellow at the Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement, a member of the Academy of Home Equity in Financial Services, and a visiting professor of aging and retirement living at the American College of Financial Services.
A nationally recognized gerontologist, Dr. Timmermann earned a Bachelor of Arts, with honors, from the University of Colorado in 1963. She subsequently began her career in public relations and communications, first with the Rowland Company in New York City as an account executive from 1964 to 1967, director of public information of the State University of New York's Educational Communications Office from 1967 to 1972 and an account executive and NYC liaison at Hoefer-Amidei Public Relations from 1972 to 1975. Dr. Timmermann continued her studies at Columbia University Teachers College, obtaining a Master of Arts in 1967 and a Doctor of Education in 1979.
Focusing her career on educational gerontology after receipt of her EdD degree, she served as the director of the Institute of Lifetime Learning at AARP from 1976 to 1986. She has held other executive positions in the field of aging on the national level from 1987 to 1997 including director of education and training for the American Society on Aging, director of education at SeniorNet and the Western regional director of the American Foundation for the Blind. In addition to her primary endeavors, Dr. Timmermann participated as a speaker at many national and international conferences in the field and has been interviewed by hundreds of media outlets.
Civically, Dr. Timmermann dedicated a portion of her time to serving on boards and commissions. She has chaired the National Alliance for Caregiving, the Business Forum on Aging and the Coalition of Adult Education Organizations and has been on the boards of directors of several organizations including the American Foundation for the Blind, the American Society on Aging, Generations United and the National Aging in Place Council. She served as vice president of the county Commission on the Status of Women in California. A respected voice in the field, she has been active as a financial gerontology columnist for the Journal of Financial Service Professionals since 1998, an editor of Generations Magazine, and an author of professional articles. For her accomplishments in the field, Dr. Timmermann received the Gloria Cavanaugh National Award for Excellence in Education and Training from the American Society on Aging in 2003 and the American Society on Aging Award in 2019.
She married George W. Bonham (deceased) in 1983 and has two stepchildren, Faith Silver and Mark Bonham.
