D. Michael Nelson is the Virginia S. Lang Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He received his MD and PhD from Washington University in 1977, completed obstetrical and gynecological residency at Barnes Hospital in 1981, and fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at The Ohio State University in 1983. He has been on the faculty of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Washington University School of Medicine in Saint Louis, MO, since 1983. He has cared for high risk pregnancies, conducted basic science research, and taught the next generation of physicians for the last four decades. He married his high school sweetheart, Peggy, in 1971, and they have three children and six grandchildren.

Dr. Nelson is a sub-specialist in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Washington University, concentrating his clinical activities on the care of underserved and medically high-risk pregnant women. His basic research has targeted the molecular and cellular function of the human placenta, funded by the National Institutes of Health, the March of Dimes, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization over his tenure. He has published more than 150 original scientific papers and has edited three books about the placenta. He was the Editor of the international journal Placenta for seven years. Dr. Nelson has fostered the careers of more than 350 obstetricians and gynecologists and 30 maternal-fetal medicine sub-specialists, as well as innumerable medical students at Washington University.

Dr. Nelson has received the President's Distinguished Senior Scientist Award from the Society for Reproductive Investigation, the Washington University Alumni Distinguished Service Award, the outstanding Clinician Award from the Missouri Maternal, Child and Family Health Coalition, and the Dr. Neville Grant Outstanding Clinician Award from the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Foundation. He has been named the Faculty Teacher of the Year by the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology four times, received the Resident Teacher of the Year Award four times, and awarded the coveted Samuel R. Goldstein Leadership Award in Medical Student Education at the School of Medicine. His name is engraved in the Wall of Honor in the Maternity Building Plaza at Washington University. Dr. Nelson was presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who in 2019.
