Dr. Michael Hagen Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Medical Education

Dr. Hagen channels years of educational experience into his role as a professor in the department of family practice at the University of Kentucky



Dr. Michael Hagen was presented with a President's Award from the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and the Physician's Recognition Award from the American Medical Association.

    LEXINGTON, KY, November 22, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Michael Hagen has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Backed by many years of professional excellence in education and educational administration, Dr. Hagen serves as a professor in the department of family medicine at the University of Kentucky, where he has also worked as the project director for computer-based assessment at the American Board of Family Medicine, the associate and interim chairman in the aforementioned department, and both an associate and an assistant professor. Previously, he gained valuable expertise as the senior vice president, the vice president of assessment methods development and the associate director of assessment methods for the American Board of Family Medicine. Dr. Hagen has been further active in private practice with Family Medicine Associates in Aurora, MO.

Throughout his career, Dr. Hagen has also excelled on the residency review committee of family practice for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and as a fellow in clinical decision making for the New England Medical Center. Although his career has been filled with highlights, he is especially proud of being elected to the board of directors of the American Board of Family Medicine. Dr. Hagen additionally fondly recalls obtaining a fellowship in medical informatics.

Certified in clinical informatics and family medicine, Dr. Hagen earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Denison University in the early 1970s. Subsequently, he graduated with a Doctor of Medicine before completing a residency in family medicine at the University of Missouri between 1975 and 1978. He retains his professional alignment with a number of organizations including the Kentucky Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Society for Medical Decision Making, the Kentucky Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Medical Informatics Association. During his spare time, Dr. Hagen also contributes to his community as a deacon with Second Presbyterian Church.

Utilizing his considerable expertise, Dr. Hagen co-authored "Saunders Review Family Practice," in 1992, 1997 and 2002. He has also provided his wealth of research to numerous articles and book chapters, such as "Medical Informatics, the Internet, and Telemedicine," "Strategy for Revising and Updating Maintenance of Certification Self-Assessment Modules (SAMs)" and "Methods for Performing Survival Curve Quality-of-Life Assessments." Additionally, Dr. Hagen holds seven U.S. patents and has been invited to more than 45 speaking engagements.

Due to his outstanding work in his field, Dr. Hagen has been honored on many occasions. In addition to participating on the Step II USMLE subcommittee on public health and preventative medicine, he accepted fellowship from the American Academy of Family Physicians and was nominated for a Golden Apple Award in 1986. More recently, he was presented with a President's Award from the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, the Physician's Recognition Award from the American Medical Association and recognition among the Best Doctors in America in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2007, 2009 and 2014. Professional publications such as Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare have also celebrated him for his efforts. Looking toward the future, Dr. Hagen intends to spend more time with his grandchildren.
