Briefly working in accounting for the Internal Revenue Service in Chicago after college, he quickly realized that it was not a career path that he wanted to continue long-term. Recruited as an agent for Country Companies in Rochelle, IL, in 1962, he remained with the organization until his retirement, earning the roles of an agency manager, an executive assistant at the company's home office in Bloomington, the director of agency administration and the vice president and the general manager of the life health mutual fund complex. During the last 12 years of his career, Mr. Engelkes also served as the vice president for Country Capitol Management Company, a financial planning firm in Bloomington.
To share his expertise with other industry professionals, Mr. Engelkes was a member of the board of directors and the chairman of BroMenn Healthcare. He also participated as president on the board of directors of the Community Cancer Center. Locally, he provided his expertise on the board of directors and as the president of the Heartland Community College Foundation, as a district chairman of the Boy Scouts of America in Lincoln, IL, as a member of the Community Resource Development Committee in Lincoln, a trustee and elder of the Second Presbyterian Church and the president of the Illinois Life Insurance Council. A chartered life underwriter and a chartered financial consultant, Mr. Engelkes received a bachelor's degree at Northern Illinois University in 1961.
Among other professional affiliations, Mr. Engelkes was a member of the National Association of Life Underwriters, the American Society of Chartered Life Underwriters and the Illinois Life Underwriters Association, for which he flourished as the former vice president and the director of the political action committee. He remains active with several Masonic Organizations. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Engelkes has been featured in the 45th through 55th editions of Who's Who in America.
