Dr. Bonnie Benzies Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Psychology

Dr. Benzies lends years of psychological expertise to her work with the state of Illinois and work in private practice in the Chicago area



Dr. Bonnie Benzies is an Illinois Licensed Clinical Psychologist and a state, national and internationally Certified Substance Abuse Counselor and Preventionist.

    GLEN ELLYN, IL, November 25, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Bonnie Benzies has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Born to Roy Benzies and Margaret Benzies-Sorensen, Dr. Benzies enjoyed a career as a clinical psychologist requiring a broad range of skills and expertise. She began her career as a Statistician/research assistant at the Illinois State Psychiatric Institute (ISPI). The latter part of her career she served as a Public Service Administrator at Elgin Mental Health Center - both facilities are part of the Illinois Department of Mental Health.

Dr. Benzies received a BS in Elementary Education from MacMurray College in Jacksonville, IL. Her Master's Degree and Doctor of Philosophy degree, both In psychology, granted by the Illinois Institute of Technology (1971 and 1980). She received additional formal training in substance abuse counseling at Loop College in Chicago (now Harold Washington College). Dr. Benzies is an Illinois Licensed Clinical Psychologist and a state, national and internationally Certified Substance Abuse Counselor and Preventionist.

Early in her career Dr. Benzies served as a psychometrist for Jewish Vocational Services and as the Women's Counselor at the Illinois College of Optometry. Over the course of her career she taught at Moraine Valley Community College, Harper College, Chicago State University (now Governor's State University) and Illinois Institute of Technology as a graduate teaching assistant. In the early '80s she worked full time for the Department of Psychiatry at Ingalls Memorial Hospital, and as the expert witness for the Cook County Juvenile Court.

While at ISPI Dr. Benzies co-researched and published a psychological test to assess suicide potential. After being there only two years, she received the hospital's Superior Performance Award. Following full time employment at ISPI, Dr. Benzies was retained as a research consultant.
Over the course of her career, Dr. Benzies has been published in the professional literature multiple times, article topics ranging from predicting suicide to the efficacy of ECT. Throughout her career, Dr. Benzies was engaged in ongoing staff training, community presentations and presentations at state-wide department and professional association conferences.

While at Elgin Mental Health Center Dr, Benzies developed the first comprehensive treatment program in the Illinois Department of Mental Health for "MISA" patients - those with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders. She was Director of Psychology for Community Psychiatric Services, the facility's Employee Assistance Program and Pastoral Care Services. She also worked with the medical directors on ongoing research projects. During this time Dr, Benzies served on many state-wide and national task forces, most notably the JCAHO Task Force on the Depressive Disorders as a member of both the Core Group and the full task force. These additionally included the Illinois Council on Problem and Compulsive Gambling and multiple local and state-wide MISA work groups and task forces. In 1990 Dr. Benzies was honored with the Illinois Department of Mental Health Recognition Award as Outstanding Employee of the Year.

Dr. Benzies also maintained a private practice throughout her career, serving the communities of Chicago, Hanover Park, Palatine, and Wheaton, Illinois. By serving both inpatient and outpatient populations, Dr. Benzies had the privilege of working with the full range of psychological disorders and all cultures and individuals from all socio-economic strata. Most recently she conducted a substance abuse group for women inmates at the DuPage County Jail. Currently, Dr. Benzies combines her knowledge and skills as a psychologist with training in healing prayer through the International Order of St. Luke the Physician to serve seriously ill patients in local hospitals.

At various stages of her career, Dr. Benzies has been a member of the Chicago Association of Psychoanalytic Psychology, the Illinois and American Psychological Associations, the Employee Assistance Professionals Association, the American Board of Forensic Examiners and the National Council on Problem Gambling.

For her many accomplishments, Dr. Benzies was featured in such professional publications as Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who of American Women.
