Capt. Luke Clyburn Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Capt. Luke Clyburn received a 2006 Congressional Recognition from the United States Senate and a 1994 Unsung Hero Award from the Michigan House of Representatives.

Mr. Clyburn is a well-known and well-respected real estate broker and appraiser in his local community of White Lake, Michigan. Serving clients for more than 40 years, he founded Clyburn Appraisal Services in 1987 after working as an associate broker for several years. A journey that began in 1964, he initially worked as a chief loan officer for First Federal Savings & Loan Association, later joining the Bateman Real Estate Corp. as an associate broker and United Guaranty Residential Insurance Co. as a regional representative. Between 1983 and 1987, he held the title of senior account manager at Investors Mortgage Insurance Holding Co. in Boston before ultimately forming his own company. In order to keep abreast of changes in the industry, Mr. Clyburn involves himself with the American Society of Appraisers and the Michigan Association of Real Estate Appraisers.

Outside of his work in real estate, Mr. Clyburn has devoted an extensive amount of time as a licensed merchant marine captain and dive instructor. Working on a number of projects over the years, including as the director of sea operations of the Mirek Standowicz shipwreck recovery expedition for the SS Carl D. Bradley in Lake Michigan and the drowned river project at the Straits of Mackinac, he also lent his expertise as a project director and underwater photographer. Founder and president of Inter-Seas Exploration, Mr. Clyburn has offered numerous different scuba classes and certifications since the company's inception in 1999.

In 2002, Mr. Clyburn began his tenure as the president of the Noble Odyssey Foundation. Bringing together all those who have an interest in underwater research, the foundation develops and supports projects that strive to enhance the public understanding of the science and history of the Great Lakes. The foundation also supports the United States Sea Cadets Corps, by involving the cadets of the Great Lakes Division in various scientific research projects. These projects are conducted on board the training vessel, Pride of Michigan, and cadets work directly with scientists and other professionals in conducting underwater collection of data and in geological, archeological and natural sciences exploration. Mr. Clyburn has notably been the captain of the Pride of Michigan since 1989 and was the captain of the Noble Odyssey from 1977 to 1989.

As a result of his expertise on the water, Mr. Clyburn was the project director of the 1982 documentary film "Angels of the Sea," which won a New York Film Festival Award. Additionally, he has been the project director, performed field work and raised funds for 12 films for the Public Broadcasting Service on the Great Lakes ancient shores and has also contributed multiple articles to professional journals in his fields. A member of and past president of the International Ship Masters' Association, he is further affiliated with the Navy League of the United States, the Detroit Lodge International Shipmasters' Association and the American Academy of Underwater Sciences.

Graduating from the American Savings and Loan Institute in 1970, Mr. Clyburn went on to complete coursework at the Pontiac Business Institute in Michigan before obtaining a Bachelor of Science from the Detroit College of Business in 1972. Following these accomplishments, he concluded his academic efforts at Central Michigan University, where he earned a Master of Business Management in 1983. Mr. Clyburn is certified as a scuba instructor through the Professional Association of Dive Instructors, the American Academy of Underwater Scientists and Scuba Diving International.

The recipient of several awards, including a 2016 Telly Award and 2014 Chairman's Award for his time as a Navy Sea Cadet, Mr. Clyburn also received a 2006 Congressional Recognition from the United States Senate and a 1994 Unsung Hero Award from the Michigan House of Representatives.
