Ray E. Hiebert Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Ray E. Hiebert is now a professor emeritus and former founding dean of the College of Journalism at the University of Maryland.

Now a professor emeritus and former founding dean of the College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, Dr. Hiebert celebrates 50 years in academia. Retiring in 2008, during his 40-year tenure on campus he notably served as a professor of international media systems from 1980 to 1998 and was the head of the department of journalism between 1968 and 1972. He also worked with the former dean as a consultant to the University of Maryland's journalism education projects in China. Dr. Hiebert came from American University in Washington, D.C., which he served for nine years as both a professor and the chairman in the department of journalism.

Dr. Hiebert began his career in journalism with the Los Angeles Examiner, the Washington Post, the American Banker and NBC News. He later worked for the Voice of America where he was an academic advisor. There he helped establish its international communication training center, which offers short courses for journalists, broadcasters, information specialists and communicators from all over the world. Further, Dr. Hiebert was a founding director for the American Journalism Center in Budapest, Hungary, an organization that, with the help of a grant from the International Media Fund in Washington, offered journalism courses for Hungarian students and workshops for Hungarian journalists. He served as president of Communications Research Associates since its founding in 1979 to 2017. The organization specialized in communication planning, research and training.

Very active professionally, as a freelance journalist and lecturer Dr. Hiebert has traveled throughout Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and the Caribbean directing workshops. In more recent years, he has lectured at universities in Amsterdam, Leipzig, Tehran, Dubai, Wuhan, Hong Kong, South Africa, Mexico, Algeria and Bulgaria. Serving his local community for many years as well, Dr. Hiebert was the vice-chairman of the Montgomery County Cable-TV Commission in Maryland and a member of the St. Mary's County Cable-TV Commission.

Dr. Hiebert published many articles as author and editor on history, biography, journalism, public relations, public affairs and mass media and is currently the longtime editor of Public Relations Review, A Critical Research Journal, since 1975. He has published over 20 books and texts, including "Exploring Mass Media" in 2000, "Mass Media" in 1991, "Precision Public Relations" in 1988, "The Press in Washington" in 1966 and four biographies, including "Courtier to the Crowd: The Story of Ivy Lee" in 1966. Dr. Hiebert was an advisory editor for Longman Publishers and John Wiley Publishers in New York and Acropolis Books in Washington, D.C. and was an editor for the Radio-TV News Directors Association, the world's largest professional organization devoted exclusively to broadcast and digital journalism.

An alumnus of Stanford University, Dr. Hiebert received a Bachelor of Arts in 1954. He later attended Columbia University where he acquired a Master of Science in 1957 and the University of Maryland with a Master of Arts in 1961 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1962. Dr. Hiebert also served two years in the U.S. Army between 1954 and 1956 where he was an editor of an Army newspaper in Orleans, France.

Dr. Hiebert is a member and past president of the Society of Professional Journalists (Maryland chapter) and a member of Cosmos Club and several honor societies. He received a 1982 Fulbright fellowship to Africa, was later honored in 2000 with a Landmark Award for International Service from the University of Maryland and is a celebrated Marquis listee. He has been featured in over 50 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
