CHAMPAIGN, IL, December 03, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present W. John Nelson with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Nelson celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Nelson is a renowned geologist of more than 40 years who has been employed with the Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS) since 1974. Acquired by the organization soon after graduating from college, the ISGS is part of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a premier state geological survey which serves the needs of Illinois with earth science information relevant to the state's environmental quality, economic vitality and public safety. Prior to joining ISGS, Mr. Nelson briefly worked for Phillips Petroleum Company in Denver. Although he has since retired in 2007, he remains active in his research, especially on the Pennsylvanian stratigraphy of the Illinois Basin.

Some of Mr. Nelson's earlier work has involved detailed mapping of underground coal mines and delineating geologic features related to roof stability. He then began mapping tectonic fault zones in underground mines before devoting the remainder of his career to mapping local and regional structure and publishing reports and works on the structure and tectonics of Illinois and other locations. To remain aware of developments pertinent to his field, Mr. Nelson has maintained his membership with the Geological Society of America.

During his notable career, Mr. Nelson had the opportunity to spend a year in central Montana between 1989 and 1990 as part of an exchange program with the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology. There, he completed a concentrated study, which included surface and subsurface mapping of the Cat Creek area, which was the first oil field in the state. Since that time, Mr. Nelson has conducted extensive research in reactivation of faults, Tertiary and Quaternary tectonism in Illinois and sequence stratigraphy of Mississippian and Pennsylvanian rocks.

As a result of Mr. Nelson's studies, he has published more than 150 scientific articles, reports and maps. Moreover, he contributed to over 75 ISGS publications, more than 50 geologic quadrangle maps, 15 articles in field trip guidebooks and over 70 abstracts at national meetings. According to available records, Mr. Nelson notably holds the record for most publications among all ISGS geologists.

Born and raised in Vermont, Mr. Nelson developed a passion for geology as a child while enjoying the landscape that he called home. After high school, he attended college nearby at Williams College in Massachusetts where he acquired a Bachelor of Science in geology in 1971. He then transferred to the University of Illinois where he attained a Master of Science in geology in 1973. Mr. Nelson was the 2019 recipient of the Gordon H. Wood Jr. Memorial Award by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists' Energy Minerals Division's Eastern Section in recognition of outstanding contributions to the geology of coal and other energy minerals.
