Dr. Gugliuzza, a professor of surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) since 1990, is a celebrated transplant surgeon of more than 35 years. A faculty member at UT since 1990, she was initially hired as an assistant professor and subsequently held the roles of an associate professor, director of the abdominal transplant section, program director of general surgery and director of transplant. Dr. Gugliuzza came from Tulane University, where she contributed one year as an instructor of surgery and research associate in surgery and transplantation between 1989 and 1990.

Dr. Gugliuzza has worked for the Southwest Transplant Alliance, an independent, nonprofit organ and tissue recovery agency, since 1990. Formerly, she served as a recovery surgeon on behalf of the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency in New Orleans between 1989 and 1990. She also worked as the chief of staff at John Sealy Hospital, UTMB, from 2012 to 2014. Additionally, she was active as a member of the board of directors of the United Network for Organ Sharing between 2002 and 2004. She continues to serve as chairman of the Southwest Transplant Alliance medical advisory board since 2012, a role she formerly held between 1999 and 2007. A presenter in her field, Dr. Gugliuzza has also contributed numerous articles to various medical journals in her area of expertise, as well as chapters to book.

Dr. Gugliuzza received an Associate of Science at Lake Land College in 1977, a Bachelor of Science with honors at Eastern Illinois University in 1978 and a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Illinois in 1982. Additional educational pursuits include an internship and residency in surgery at Tulane University Medical School and Affiliated Hospitals, as well as a fellowship in the division of transplantation at Tulane and a special fellowship in pancreas transplantation at the University of Minnesota. Moreover, Dr. Gugliuzza is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery.

A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Gugliuzza is also a member of several other industry-related organizations. To wit, she has affiliated with the Association of Transplant Surgeons, American Society of Transplantation, the Southern Surgical Association, and the Galveston County Medical Society. What's more, Dr. Gugliuzza is a past president of the Texas Transplant Society and first vice president for the Texas Surgical Society.

In 2012, Dr. Gugliuzza was awarded a Trailblazers Award by the Texas Transplantation Society. She also received a Golden Scalpel Award for Outstanding Teacher in Surgery in 2002, was named as an Outstanding Alumni by the American Association of Community Colleges in 1998 and an Outstanding Alumnus Award by the Lake Land College in 1989. She was likewise listed within several professional publications as well, including every edition of Best Doctors in America since 2009 and Texas Super Doctors every year since 2013. Furthermore, she is a William Osler Emeritus Scholar by the John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine.
