A renowned pediatrician, clinical geneticist, and internist, Dr. Riccardi has garnered a laudable reputation in his field for more than 40 years. He began his academic career in 1973 at the University of Colorado as an Assistant Professor, serving as assistant director of the genetic counseling clinics and genetics unit and as the co-founder, organizer and associate director of the Colorado-Wyoming Regional Genetic Counseling Program. He subsequently held teaching and academic appointments at Milwaukee Children's Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin (Associate Professor; 1975-1977), Baylor College of Medicine (1977-1990) and, later, the University of Texas Health Science Center, and ultimately becoming a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of California Los Angeles in 1991. During his career, Dr. Riccardi notably founded The Neurofibromatosis Institute in 1980 and was the medical director of Alfigen (The Genetics Institute) in Pasadena, California, from 1990 through 1991.

Dr. Riccardi was also notably the first to specialize in neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form on nerve tissue. Usually diagnosed in childhood or early adulthood, tumors can develop anywhere within the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord and nerves. Widely published, Dr. Riccardi has authored several books, including "The Genetic Approach to Human Disease" in 1977, "Communication and Counseling in Health Care" in 1983, and "Neurofibromatosis Phenotype, Natural History, and Pathogenesis" (Johns Hopkins University Press; 1986, 1992 and 1999). He also published the pamphlet, "Neurofibromatosis: A Primer for Patients and Families" in 1991. He was the History Editor for "Genetics in Medicine" from 2002 through March 2016 and he served on the editorial hoard for "Translational Genomics & Genetics" from 2016 to 2017. He has authored and co-authored over 270 publications in scholarly peer-reviewed journals and as book chapters.

An alumnus of the University of California Los Angeles, Dr. Riccardi received a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. He later acquired a Doctor of Medicine degree at Georgetown University in 1966, as well as a Master of Business Administration at the University of La Verne in 1993. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include an internship and residency in medicine at the Health Center Hospitals, University of Pittsburgh, and a clinical and research fellowship in pediatrics in the Genetics Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Riccardi is certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics (Clinical Genetics and Clinical Cytogenetics) and the American Board of Internal Medicine. While at Baylor College of Medicine, he established the first international program for systematically evaluating and treating persons with neurofibromatosis. In this effort he also established the bases for specifying and named NF1 and NF2.

Dr. Riccardi was affiliated with several organizations with overlapping goals and agendas, including the American Society of Human Genetics, the Texas Neurofibromatosis Foundation and the Department of Defense Neurofibromatosis Research Program (NFRP). He is a Fellow of the American College of Physician and an Emeritus Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and is a Founding Fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics. Additionally, Dr. Riccardi participated at an invited lecture at the American College of Medical Genetics in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2012. The topic was titled "Photons, Gravity and Untranslated Nucleic Acids Are the Origin of Life and Contribute Substantially to Genetic Disease."

Well regarded in his field, Dr. Riccardi received a 2008 Friedrich von Recklinghausen Award from the Children's Tumor Foundation. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been showcased in more than 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the West.
