Having accrued almost 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Gray, now retired, holds the distinguished title of a dean emeritus by Azusa Pacific University, affiliated with the university libraries since 1989. He spent a significant portion of his career at the aforementioned university from 1989 to 2018, contributing in the additional positions of the dean of computer services and a university librarian, the dean of academic computer services, the interim dean of the School of Theology, the interim dean of the School for Education and Behavioral Studies, the vice provost of academic affairs, and the vice provost of graduate programs and research. Additionally, he has excelled as the president emeritus of the Sons of Revolution in California and the Rotary Club of Azusa. Dr. Gray served as the past chair for District 59 of the Republican Party of California and the past president of the Republican Club of Glendora, the Historical Society of Greenville, and the Sesquicentennial Committee of Longview. The aforementioned committee was held in a city of 75 thousand people and was one of the most enlightening and rewarding experiences of his career.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Gray pursued an education at the Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny, Iowa, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1970. He completed additional study at the Dallas Theological Seminary, obtaining a Master of Theology in 1975. After progressing to East Texas State University, Dr. Gray received a Master of Science in library science in 1977, after which he acquired a Doctor of Education in 1980. He concluded his education at Texas Woman's University, attaining a Master of Arts in 1989.
Outside of his immediate professional responsibilities, Dr. Gray was an active member of the American Library Association, the California Library Association, the Southern California Area Theological Library Association, the American Academy of Religion, and the Society of Biblical Literature. Moreover, he contributes his time and skill to the Glendora Public Library Foundation Board, the Sons of the Revolution in California, and Rotary International. During his time at Azusa Pacific University, Dr. Gray had the opportunity to develop special collections which included fine printing, California history and Biblical antiquities.
