David Terry Pratt Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. David Terry Pratt and his colleague, Bill Heiser, made a major breakthrough in the understanding of supersonic combustion.

A celebrated mechanical engineer and educator, Dr. Pratt retired in 1996 from the University of Washington in Seattle as a professor of mechanical engineering. Having also taught on the campus for 15 years, he also chaired the department between 1981 and 1986. Previously, Dr. Pratt worked on behalf of the University of Michigan as a professor and the chairman of the mechanical engineering and applied mechanics department and held teaching appointments at the University of Utah, Washington State University and the U.S. Naval Academy. He taught for a total of 38 years.

During his career, Dr. Pratt and his colleague, Bill Heiser, made a major breakthrough in the understanding of supersonic combustion. The two later co-authored a book in 1994 on their discovery. The book is titled "Hypersonic Airbreathing Propulsion." Dr. Pratt has since co-authored "Aircraft Engine Design" in 2002 and, many years prior, edited the 1976 book "Combustion and Gasification of Pulverized Coal." Additionally, he has authored and co-authored numerous scholarly articles to professional journals.

Dr. Pratt received a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering at the University of Washington in 1956. He subsequently served to the rank of a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps between 1656 and 1960 before acquiring a master's and doctorate degree at the University of California at Berkeley in 1962 and 1968, respectively. Furthermore, Dr. Pratt notably coached a national championship freshman crew at the Naval Academy in 1963.

Outside of the classroom, Dr. Pratt has garnered a laudable reputation as a sought-after consultant in his field. He also contributed as a research director of supercomputing for the Aerojet Propulsion Research Institute in Sacramento, California. Affiliated with the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), Dr. Pratt is an associate fellow. The organization honored him with a Summerfield Book Award in 1999 and 2005.

Dr. Pratt was a National Science Foundation science faculty fellow between 1965 and 1966, a Fulbright-Hays senior research fellow at Imperial College between 1974 and 1975 and David Pierpont Gardner faculty fellow at the University of Utah in 1976. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been featured in over 50 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Science and Engineering. Adjacent to his professional pursuits, Dr. Pratt enjoys such avocations as rowing and sculling, playing the ukulele, and writing song parodies.
