Dr. Gentry is renowned as a researcher in animal behavior with more than 35 years of innovation in his field to his credit. Inspired by his father, an oil worker with a gift for interacting with animals, he initially pursued an education at San Francisco State University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1962 and a Master of Arts in 1966, intending to pursue a career in wildlife research biology. Dr. Gentry earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of California Santa Cruz in 1970.
Prior to his career in wildlife biology, Dr. Gentry served as a medic in the United States Coast Guard, on active duty from 1958 to 1960. From 1970 to 1971, he held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Mawson Institute for Antarctic Research at the University of Adelaide, Australia, and joined the research faculty at the University of California Santa Cruz from 1971 to 1974. Dr. Gentry then served as a research wildlife biologist for the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)'s Marine Mammal Laboratory from 1974 to 1998, conducting behavioral research on sea lions and fur seals. From 1998 until his retirement in 2005, Dr. Gentry established a NOAA Acoustics Program that provided regulators with noise exposure criteria for marine mammals. From 2005 until 2018, he advised oil and gas companies on research they should fund relative to the effects of industry sound on marine mammals.
Dr. Gentry is the author of several works, most notably the books "Fur Seals: Maternal Strategies on Land and at Sea" in 1986, co-authored with G.L. Kooyman, and "Behavior and Ecology of the Northern Fur Seal" in 1996. He is a prominent speaker in his field, and has conducted presentations at 50 conferences and symposia. A noted member of the Society for Marine Mammalogy. Dr. Gentry has received grants from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Geological Society. His most enduring contribution to science was helping G.L. Kooyman introduce the first instruments that measured marine mammal behavior at sea. The use of similar but improved instruments has revolutionized research on marine vertebrates.
