Susan H. Rogers Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Susan H. Rogers is exceptionally proud of her involvement in the development and growth of the Math, Science and Technology (MST) Program for Caddo Parish Schools.

Rogers with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Beginning in elementary school, Dr. Rogers recognized her passion for learning science. Combining encouragement from her high school chemistry teacher with her desire to nurture a love of science in others, Dr. Rogers earned a Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry education from Louisiana Tech University where she served as zoology teaching assistant. After graduation, she taught honors science courses at Broadmoor High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she earned the National Sallie Mae Teaching Award and was chosen as Louisiana's Most Outstanding First Year Teacher.

Moving to Shreveport, Louisiana, Dr. Rogers transferred to Southwood High School to teach honors science. During this time, she served as chairman of the science department and adjunct professor for Bossier Parish Community College. She became certified as an Intel Teach Program Online Essentials Master Teacher and as a Louisiana Teacher Assistance and Assessment Program Master Teacher to mentor novice educators. While teaching full-time, Dr. Rogers continued her own education by earning a Master of Secondary Education from Centenary College of Louisiana and a Master of Biology from Louisiana Tech University.

As Dr. Rogers expanded her repertoire, she taught advanced placement chemistry at Airline High School in Bossier City, Louisiana, until accepting the position of Instructional Coordinator for the Math, Science & Technology Program for Caddo Schools in Shreveport. She was soon promoted to Supervisor of Science-High School. Dr. Rogers earned a Doctor of Education in curriculum and instruction from Texas A&M University, and then served as an instructor for the Department of Education at Centenary College of Louisiana.

Encouragement for learning is a central theme for Dr. Rogers, who has mentored students and teachers throughout her career. She credits her exemplary practices and Innovative strategies to extraordinary professional experiences. She participated in the Howard Hughes Molecular Microbiology Outreach Program, enabling her to lead hands-on laboratory experiences in which her students spliced jellyfish genes into bacteria to make them glow in the dark. In addition, she was chosen for the Harvard Medical School/Tufts University Case Study Method workshop in Boston to learn innovative strategies to help problem-solve medical diagnoses.

Dr. Rogers is an ardent supporter of mentoring educators. She has presented at numerous professional state and national conferences including Louisiana Science Teachers Association, National Science Teachers Association, American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, and the Louisiana Executive Leadership Summit on Blended Learning. She is a strong proponent for student involvement and employed many types of emerging educational technologies before they became mainstreamed including SmartBoards, classroom response systems, and digital microscopy to get learning directly into the hands of her students. Dr. Rogers continues to promote innovative teaching and learning strategies. Her research interests are Virtual Learning Platforms; Educational Technologies; STEAM Topics (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics); and Reinventing Pre-Service Teacher Programs.

Throughout her nearly 30 years in education, Dr. Rogers collaborated at the district and state levels to co-author curricula in science and education, coordinated STEAM programs for Caddo Schools, and received numerous grants to promote science teaching for her classroom and school districts. Furthermore, she was proud to have been the first Louisiana high school science teacher to earn certification by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards in Adolescent/Young Adulthood Science.

In a career filled with highlights, Dr. Rogers is exceptionally proud of her involvement in the development and growth of the Math, Science and Technology (MST) Program for Caddo Parish Schools to prepare students by improving access to and knowledge of technology to teachers and students through collaborative projects. Hundreds of teachers and thousands of students have benefitted from the cutting-edge MST Program.
