Ms. Atkinson is renowned as a piano teacher with more than 45 years of excellence in her discipline. Growing up her parents played piano for their pleasure, this led her to discover a precocious talent for piano, organ and mountain dulcimer. She has also sang in community choirs, played clarinet, four different sizes of recorders and recently began to play the ukulele. Ms. Atkinson decided early on to pursue a career in music and subsequently graduated from the University of South Alabama in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science in music education.

In 1973, Ms. Atkinson began her career as a private piano teacher serving the community of Mobile, Alabama. She taught piano at Indian Springs Elementary School from 1975 to 2003 and at Morningside Elementary School from 1987 to 2001. Ms. Atkinson found success with Kate Shepard Elementary from 2003 to 2013 and from 2002 to 2005 with Saint Mark's Methodist School as a piano instructor.

Ms. Atkinson is active in her faith community, and has been active as an organist since 1973. From 1995 to 2013, she has performed clarinet with the Mobile Pops Band, a mid-career turn that she considers to be a professional highlight. Likewise, Ms. Atkinson was a member of the Mobile Music Teachers' Association from 1974 to 2003, where she formerly held the post of a vice president and was a member of the honors recital committee. She is a member of the American Organist Guild and has been the president of United Methodist Women groups at Kingswood UMC, Forest Hill UMC and St. John UMC.
