Carol Townsend has become an authority in her industry and currently excels as an associate professor at Buffalo State College.

With more than 50 years of experience in art and design education to her credit, Ms. Townsend has become an authority in her industry and currently excels as an associate professor at Buffalo State College. She has also served as the coordinator of the Annual Buffalo State Student Art Sale since 1996 and the coordinator of the Artists on the Road: Travel As Source of Inspiration lecture series at Buffalo State since 2013. Previously, she excelled as a teacher of art in the Rochester City School District from 1969 to 1971, a visiting lecturer at Ohio University from 1973 to 1974, a lecturer at the Capital Normal University in 2010, the director of the international ceramics program in Mexico (in conjunction with Daemen College located in Snyder) in 1976. Ms. Townsend was likewise active as an associate professor at Daemen College from 1974 to 1988, an instructor at Niagara Community College from 1989 to 1995, and an assistant professor at Buffalo State College from 2000 to the present.

Prior to becoming an esteemed art educator, Ms. Townsend pursued higher education with a Bachelor of Science from Nazareth College in 1969 and a Master of Fine Arts from Ohio University in 1973. She was inspired by Angela Fina, who encouraged her to pursue drawing and art. Ms. Townsend has shown her work at various exhibitions including the 4th Biennial International Craft Exhibit at the Tweed Museum in 1977, the Chautuaqua National Exhibition of American Art in 1984, Common Clay: Creating Olds and New Ceramics at NCECA Conference in 2004 and Kenesis 50th Anniversary Exhibition at Nazareth College in 2018. Additionally, her work was shown in a two-person exhibition at the Liptov Gallery of Peter Michal Bohun in Liptovsky Mikulas, Slovakia in 2019. She is the author of two books of poetry, A Cinder in my Knee (2016) and The Color of Shadows (2019) published by Buffalo Arts Publishing.

A civic-minded professional, Ms. Townsend has volunteered prolifically in her field and community. She has served on the Advisory Council of the Anne Frank Project since 2010 and on the Board of Directors for StitchBuffalo since 2017, the Buffalo-Lille Sister City Association from 2011 to 2018 and the Chautauqua Literary Arts Friends from 2013 to 2018. She served as production designer from 2000 to 2003 in consultation with Meta Media documentaries that aired on PBS affiliates, and as an artist on both the Herd About Buffalo and the Buffalo On Wheels projects for the Burchfield-Penney Art Center. Additionally, she served as a consultant for St. Joseph University Parish from 1999 to 2000.

Outside of her professional responsibilities, Ms. Townsend remains informed of the changes and advancements in her industry through relevant organizations. At the Buffalo Society of Artists, she was the associate vice president in 1991, and the president in 1992. In her free time, she enjoys gardening and traveling and has made study trips to China, Japan, Italy, Greece, France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Ireland and Spain, among others.

In light of her many achievements in the field, Ms. Townsend has received a number of awards and accolades throughout her career. She won the Distinguished Faculty Performance Award from Daemen College in 1979, the Kenneth Coe Award from the Gallery of Fine Art in 1974, the Bene Award from Modern Liturgy Magazine in 1989, the Jurors' Award from the Plain Arts IV International Exhibition in 2002 and First place in the Buffalo Society of Artists 10th Catalog Exhibition in 2006. Likewise, Ms. Townsend received a Faculty Excellence Citation from Buffalo State College in 1996 and achieved first place in the Empire State Craft Alliance in 1990. A celebrated Marquis listee, she has been featured in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women.
