Peggy Plant Calestro combined an interest in helping people with her persuasive writing skills to create a career in development and fund-raising.

Ms. Calestro combined an interest in helping people with her persuasive writing skills to create a career in development and fund-raising. As vice president of Columbus State Community College, she raised $15 million to fund scholarships for first-generation college students and administered a $16 million federally-funded program to provide tuition and support services to 30,000 single women attending community colleges in Ohio. For more than fifteen years, she was vice president of the Ohio Children's Foundation, where she supervised grants, worked closely with grantees and applicants, and developed a home-visiting program which helped 10,000 children and their families prepare for kindergarten. Ms. Calestro was also the executive director of the local college consortium, Higher Education Council of Columbus.
A long-time advocate for Appalachians and Appalachian migrants, Ms. Calestro has trained thousands of educators and social service professionals working with Appalachian families. She has written numerous articles on the topic over the years. In 2014, she co-authored "Lost and Found in Appalachia" with her daughter, Julie E, Calestro-McDonald, which chronicles the many road trips the pair has taken through central Appalachia. She and her daughter are members of the Ohio Humanities Council Speakers Bureau, presenting workshops on Appalachian history and culture throughout the state.
Ms. Calestro has trained more than fifty not-for-profit boards on a variety of topics: strategic planning, fund-raising and development, and group dynamics. She also served on fifteen nonprofit boards in education and social services.
She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Duke University and a Master of Business Administration from Franklin University. She and her husband, Ken, have two children, Julie E, Calestro-McDonald and Marshall Brady Calestro.
