Dr. Charles Henley Celebrated for Dedication to the Feld of Osteopathic Medicine

Dr. Henley lends years of experience in osteopathic medicine into his work at the Dean of the Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.



    HUNTSVILLE, TX, December 20, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Charles Henley has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

A veteran of the U.S. Army Medical Corps with over 20 years of service to his credit, Dr. Henley graduated from Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1977 and completed a family medicine residency in 1980 in the military. Assignments in the military including residency program director, faculty development fellowship director, and department chair. He is board certified in family medicine and holds an MPH in epidemiology from the University of Hawaii. His last assignment in the military was chief consultant to the Army Surgeon General and head of policy. He commanded the 41st combat support hospital and has several awards during his military tenure including the Legion of Merit, the Army meritorious service medal with oak leaf, commendations, and the medal of medical merit. He left the military in 1997 as a full colonel.

He then began his civilian career as chair of the department of family medicine back at his alma mater, OSU-COM where he was also a tenured full professor, and where he also started the rural health track. In 2004 he joined the family medicine department of the University of Oklahoma –Tulsa branch where he was also a professor and vice chair of the department and held an endowed chair for research. During this time he was also a fellow of the American Council on Education (ACE) from 2007-2008.

In 2011 Dr. Henley became the founding associate dean for clinical affairs at the new osteopathic school at Marian University. Which has now graduated classes and has full accreditation. While in Indiana he received the physician of the year award in 2015.

In 2016 he became the Founding Dean of the new college of osteopathic medicine at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. Which now has pre-accreditation. He is a member of the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association (TOMA), as well as the Texas Academy of Family Physicians. He is also a member of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), the American College of Osteopathic Family Practitioners, and the American Academy of Family Practitioners, as well as the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM).

He is passionate about academic medicine and rural health which is also the mission of the new medical school.
