Guilhamet, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Guilhamet, a distinguished emeritus professor at the City College, City University of New York (CUNY), retired in 2011 after more than 40 wonderful years of service to his profession. Hired in 1971 as an assistant professor of English, he was later promoted to the positions of an associate and full professor throughout his tenure, during which he also chaired the English department between 1997 and 2000. Dr. Guilhamet formerly taught at the prestigious Yale University as an instructor and assistant professor.

Publishing his third book in 2010, "Defoe and the Whig Novel: A Reading of the Major Fiction," Dr. Guilhamet revisits the writings of Daniel Defoe to evaluate them in terms of cultural and political Whig themes. Other works to Dr. Guilhamet's credit include "Satire and the Transformation of Genre" in 1989 and "The Sincere Ideal: Studies on Sincerity in Eighteenth-Century English Literature" in 1974.

Born in the Bronx, New York, Dr. Guilhamet received a New York State scholarship and attended Syracuse University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1959 as an ROTC graduate. He continued into the U.S. Army Reserve and active duty as a first and second lieutenant between 1959 and 1968. He attended Rutgers University and acquired a Master of Arts in 1962. He subsequently matriculated at the prestigious Harvard University, from which he attained a Doctor of Philosophy in 1967. While in school, Dr. Guilhamet notably excelled as teaching assistant at Rutgers between 1959 to 1961 and a teaching fellow at Harvard between 1964 and 1967.

A member of the American Society for 18th Century Studies, Dr. Guilhamet was active on the organization's Gottschalk prize committee from 1984 to 1985 and as the chairman from 1985 to 1986. An interdisciplinary group that was established in 1969, the society is dedicated to the advancement of scholarship in all aspects of the period from the later 17th through the early 19th centuries. Dr. Guilhamet also received a Charles Dexter Travel Fellowship through Harvard University in England in 1967 and an Eisner Fellowship in 1999. He was also a grantee recipient of the National Endowment of the Humanities in 1980 and of the Professional Staff Congress at CUNY in 2000.
