Professor O'Day is renowned as a modern European history educator with more than 55 years of distinction in his field. He initially pursued an education at the University of Massachusetts with the intention to study business, but found himself so engrossed in his history classes that he changed majors. He subsequently earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Massachusetts in 1954 before graduating with a Master of Arts at Indiana University in 1956. From 1958 to 1959, O'Day completed postgraduate coursework at Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen.

Mr. O'Day began his career as a lecturer for the University of Michigan from 1960 to 1961, and DePauw University from 1961 to 1962. He later found success with Southern Illinois University as an assistant professor, an associate professor, an off-campus coordinator and the director of undergraduate studies in history between 1965 and 1992. In 1998, Mr. O'Day was granted professor emeritus status by the aforementioned university, a designation he holds to this day.

Extremely passionate about family history, O'Day was previously active president of the Illinois State Genealogical Society and the Genealogy Society of Southern Illinois. His professional research is centered on pre-Famine Irish immigration to the Northeastern United States, and he is proud to have been included in the seminal collected volume on the topic. Likewise, he is a frequent contributor to professional publications and reference works. Moreover, Mr. O'Day is the recipient of Amoco and Queen Awards for Teaching Excellence, and a grant from the Federal Republic of Germany.
