Volpe with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. With 40 years of experience to her credit, Ms. Volpe is retired from full-time professional activity, having most recently worked part-time as a substitute teacher for grades K through 12 from 2005 to 2007. Prior to her retirement, she excelled as a special education teacher for Valencia High School between 1998 and 2003 and Saugus High School from 1979 until 1998. From 1976 to 1979, she held the position of a substitute teacher for grades K through 12 with the Weld County School District Six. Previously, she served as a fine arts teacher for the Nipmuc Regional High School in Mendon, Massachusetts, between 1968 and 1969. Ms. Volpe began her career as a fifth grade teacher for Memorial Elementary School in Milford, Massachusetts, from 1967 until 1968.
Before embarking upon her professional path, Ms. Volpe pursued an education at the University of Northern Colorado, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1964. She concluded her academic efforts at the University of Northern Colorado in 1978, graduating with a Master of Arts. A graduate of the Institute of Children's Literature, Ms. Volpe has obtained certifications as a fine arts teacher, a learning handicap specialist, a resource specialist and an English language development teacher for high schools.
Beyond her responsibilities within the field, Ms. Volpe has participated in numerous endeavors outside of her professional circles. From 1974 to 1975, she flourished with the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church School in Milford, Massachusetts, as a publicity director. Moreover, she held the role of the float coordinator for the bicentennial parade in 1975. Likewise, Ms. Volpe remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise, including the California Teacher Association, the Council for Exceptional Children, Phi Delta Kappa International, Kappa Delta Pi and the Daughters of the American Revolution, for which she is a 40-year member.
Ms. Volpe found success with her written works as well, authoring poems for such publications as "Seasons to Come" in 1994, "Best Poems of 1997" in 2004, "The Other Side of Midnight" in 1997, "Best of 2001 Poems," "Best Poems and Poets of 2003" and "Best of 2005 Poems." She has additionally contributed poems to "Best of Millennium Poetry, 1999-2000," "Labours of Love" in 2006, "Songs of Honor" in 2006, "From a Window" in 2012, "Across the Way: A Poetry Anthology" in 2014 and "Best Poets of 2018," among many other compilations and anthologies. Ms. Volpe will publish her book, "Independent Thoughts from California dn Colorado" in January 2020. She is also prolific as an artist with over 300 oil and watercolor paintings to her name, covering both impressionist and modern art forms.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Ms. Volpe has accrued several accolades throughout her impressive career. Honored as one of the Best Poets of 2011, she was recognized as a VFW Essay Winner in 1959. In 2014, she was presented with the Finalist Anthology Award from the Eber and Wein Publishing Company.
Always fostering a love for teaching, Ms. Volpe's reach as an educator has been vast, having made an impact in multiple states and in multiple subjects, including religious and confirmation studies. In fact, her love for teaching extends to her time as a child, having played as an educator with her neighborhood friends. Among the many highlights of her career, she is incredibly proud of winning her VFW Essay Contest as a junior in high school, as well as her ability to write poetry every day. Mentored by Joseph Himmel and John Mariani, Ms. Volpe has also translated some of her poems into French and Hungarian, a task she finds to be both challenging and interesting.
