Dr. Evan Shreeve Smith is a celebrated linguist, educator and researcher who retired from the University of Missouri in 2018 as a state authorization coordinator.

Dr. Smith is a celebrated linguist, educator and researcher who retired from the University of Missouri in 2018 as a state authorization coordinator. Prior to this appointment, he maintained activity in various roles for more than 10 years with Indiana University, including as an associate or visiting instructor of linguistics, editor for the independent study program and development coordinator. Additionally, Dr. Smith was an assistant instructor of linguistics at the University of Kansas for one year and a half. After leaving Indiana University, he became active as a course development coordinator and a state authorization coordinator in 2010, a role he excelled in until his 2018 retirement.

As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Smith has conducted studies in higher education, educational technology and educational policy. He previously served as an editor of an award-winning course titled "Consumer Education" in 1985 and was the co-editor of "Lingua Pranca" and "Son of Lingua Pranca" in 1978 and 1979. Leveraging his scholarly prowess, Dr. Smith has contributed multiple articles to various professional journals and other publications.

An alumnus of the University of Kansas, Dr. Smith received a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology and linguistics in 1973 and Master of Arts in linguistics in 1975. He then attended Indiana University where he acquired a second Master of Arts in linguistics in 1978 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1982. Among his professional memberships, Dr. Smith has been a member of the American Association for Collegiate Independent Study and the University Professional and Continuing Education Association. He still serves as a board member of the Association for Distance Education and Independent Learning, a professional association for all those engaged in, or interested in, distance learning. That organization created the Evan Smith research grant in 2019.
