In previous years, Dr. Tyra worked as a clinic director at the Human Resource Institute in Lowell, MA, from 1979 to 1983 and operated out of a private practice providing consultation as well as individual and family therapy from 1977 to 1996.
Renowned for her contributions to the healthcare field, Dr. Tyra established the Consultation & Education Department at the Metropolitan-Beaverbrook Mental Health and Retardation Center in Watertown, MA. Early in her career, she also provided her expertise as a volunteer rape-crisis counselor before this endeavor became a nationally recognized outlet for rape victims. In this position, Dr. Tyra and her group were on-call with various local hospital and police departments, offering immediate support to victims.
Instrumental as an educator and researcher, Dr. Tyra is designated as a professor emerita who taught at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. She also held academic appointments at the University of Lowell, Boston State College and at Boston University in the graduate school of nursing. Furthermore, Dr. Tyra has contributed numerous articles to professional journals in her area of expertise.
The recipient of a Research Award, Trustees' Medal and Exemplary Distinguished Public Service Award from the University of Lowell, Dr. Tyra is also a celebrated Marquis listee who has been featured in the fourth and fifth editions of Who's Who in American Nursing. A member of the American Nurses Association and the American Psychiatric Nurses Association to remain aware of developments in her field, she has also been active with several other professional organizations, such as the Daughters of the American Revolution. In more recent years, Dr. Tyra has been affiliated with the Citizens Observation Patrol through the Broward County Sheriff's Department in Florida.
