Dr. Abdel-Latif is a professor of biochemistry and molecular biology with more than 55 years of excellence in his field. Born in Palestine, he immigrated to the United States in 1951 and attended DePaul University, from which he earned a Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry in 1955 and a Master of Science in chemistry in 1958. Dr. Abdel-Latif was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1963, and completed further postgraduate work in neurochemistry at the University of Illinois' College of Medicine from 1963 until 1965.

From 1963 to 1967, Dr. Abdel-Latif excelled as a research associate scientist at the University of Illinois Department of Psychiatry and a medical research scientist for the State of Illinois Department of Mental Health. He began his career with the Medical College of Georgia in 1967 as an associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, rising to the position of a professor in 1974, as well as a regent's professor from 1987 until 2004. Dr. Abdel-Latif was granted emeritus status in 2004.

Dr. Abdel-Latif is an in-demand speaker in his field, and was a visiting professor to the University of Nottingham during the 1975 to 1976 academic year. He is a grantee of the National Institutes of Health (1965-2004), who presented him with a 1989 Merit Award for his research contributions. Dr. Abdel-Latif was the recipient of the Alcon Research Institute Award for Outstanding Contributions to Vision Research for the year 1990. Dr. Abdel-Latif considers the people he has met and worked with to be the highlights of his career, and is honored to have learned from them. He is a member of the American Physiological Society, the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), the American Society of Neurochemistry, and the American Society of Biological Chemists.
