Shirley Kelly Rose Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Ms. Shirley Kelly Rose was named as an Outstanding Faculty Member in 1992 by the Alabama College System and is proud to be the first technical college employee to be honored with such a distinction.

Having accrued more than 33 years of service to her students, Ms. Rose retired from her position as a language educator in 2000. She took an early interest in the theater, and considered pursuing acting before discovering her passion for education. Ms. Rose treated her classroom like a stage, and considers her student engagement and relationships to have been an enduring strength. She attended Florida State University, graduating in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts, and continued her education at Troy State University, from which she earned Master of Science degrees in English and adult education.

Between 1960 and 1962, Ms. Rose excelled as an English teacher at Bay County High School of Panama City, Florida. She taught English at Saint James High School in Montgomery, during the 1972 to 1973 academic year, before refocusing her career on postsecondary education. Ms. Rose joined Patterson State Technical College as an English teacher, serving from 1973 to 2000, and as the school's chairperson of general education from 1990 until 2000.

Ms. Rose was the technical college representative on the Post-Secondary Policy Advisory Committee of the State Board of Education from 1985 to 1999. She was named as an Outstanding Faculty Member in 1992 by the Alabama College System, and is proud to be the first technical college employee to be honored with such a distinction. Moreover, Ms. Rose is a past president of the Postsecondary Division of the Alabama Education Association. In her retirement, she enjoys travel and is an avid bridge player.
