Mary Huffman has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry

Ms. Huffman was named the 2019 Lowell Milken Unsung Hero Fellow



Since 2017, Mary Huffman has excelled at a fifth grade teacher with Carolina Park Elementary School.

    GOOSE CREEK, SC, January 17, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Mary Huffman has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Since 2017, Ms. Huffman has excelled at a fifth grade teacher with Carolina Park Elementary School in Pleasant, SC. Between 2002 and 2017, she flourished in the same capacity at Charles Pinckney Elementary School, Goodwin Elementary School and Goodwin Elementary Summer School. Beginning her career in 2001, she has worked as a kindergarten, first grade and second grade teacher at Northwestern Elementary School. Moreover, Ms. Huffman served as a short-term and permanent substitute at Carthage Primary School and Northwestern Elementary School in 2002.

Before embarking upon her professional path, Ms. Huffman pursued an education at Western Illinois University, from which she obtained a Bachelor of Science in elementary education in 2001 and a Master of Education in elementary education in 2008. She subsequently became officially certified to teach kindergarten through sixth grade. Currently, Ms. Huffman is completing a Doctor of Education from the Walden University College of Teaching and Learning with a graduation date set for 2020.

A skilled writer in addition to being a strong educator, Ms. Huffman was a contributing author for such texts as "The Korean War and Its Legacy: Teaching About Korea Through Inquiry" in 2019 and "Teaching History Through Literacy: Elementary Units" in 2018. She is also active as a co-developer for the project-based learning website LearningWhy. Recognized as a National Life Group 2020 Lifechanger of the Year Award nominee, Ms. Huffman has maintained her role on the Board of Directors for the Treats 4 Troops Foundation, organizer for Adopt-A-Highway, and Adopt-A-Beach. She was the Master of Ceremonies for the formal dinner, member of the seminar coordinating team and presenter for the Korean War Legacy Foundation: Athens Conference on the Korean War for teachers from 12 United Nations countries held in 2019.

She has provided professional development in adult education across the U.S. and world. She has traveled and presented around the U.S. as seminar coordinator for 1 to 8-day seminars for the Korean Legacy Foundation, Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, Educator Training and Consulting Company, Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and South Carolina Department of Education. Across the state of South Carolina, Ms. Huffman contributed to the teaching profession by writing lesson plans for South Carolina Education Television (SCETV) and speaking to the House of Representatives on behalf of SCETV to acquire education funding. With Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History she worked to develop "The Making of America: From the Founding Era through the Civil War" that included hands-on lesson examples that teachers can integrate into their own K-8 classroom. She is very committed to producing a nurturing atmosphere within her classroom and school and she strives to model the value of classroom diversity through hands-on activities.

A distinguished educator, Ms. Huffman has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades throughout the course of her career. Most recently, she was named the 2019 Lowell Milken Unsung Hero Fellow. She was also a Senior Teacher Fellow for the Korean War Legacy Foundation, and Master Teacher Fellow for the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History She was presented with the Best Practices in Social Studies Award from the South Carolina Council for the Social Studies in 2017 and the Western Illinois University Alumni Achievement Award in 2016. Ms. Huffman was additionally honored as the Charleston County School District Teacher of the Month in 2016, the National History Teacher of the Year and the South Carolina History Teacher of the Year in 2015 by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and the Teacher of the Year from 2013 to 2014 and the Distinguished Reading Teacher of the Year from 2007 to 2008 by Pinckney Elementary School.

Furthermore, Ms. Huffman accepted the Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority Scholarship Award and the Western Illinois University Greek Community Academic Scholarship Award in 2000. Likewise, she was celebrated as the Western Illinois University Leader of the Month that same year. Moreover, Ms. Huffman was lauded as the New Teacher of the Year at Goodwin Elementary School in 2002.

Ms. Huffman attributes her success to the community of continued learning. Always somehow involved in education, she had volunteered to teach Sunday school at age 14 before later becoming a children's swimming instructor. These experiences, along with her general interest and love of children, inspired her to make the decision to pursue a career in education. Looking toward the future, Ms. Huffman hopes to be teaching at the collegiate level while mentoring student teachers.
