Having developed his area of expertise in the realm of religious studies, Dr. Harstine specializes in Biblical studies and the supervision of religion and philosophy majors at Friends University. He attended Kansas State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics in 1982, and a Bachelor of Science in education in 1984, after which he began a career as a middle school mathematics teacher. Upon realizing that middle school education was not where his passion lay, he eventually returned to school in order to pursue the skills necessary to teach at the postsecondary level. Dr. Harstine earned a Master of Divinity from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1990, and subsequently attained a Doctor of Philosophy at Baylor University in 1999.

From 1982 until 1984, Dr. Harstine served as a missionary journeyman for the International Mission Board in Richmond, Virginia. He taught mathematics for Atchison Public Schools in Atchison, Kansas between 1985 and 1987, and became licensed as a minister by the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in 1990. In 1999, Dr. Harstine further distinguished himself as a lecturer at Baylor University, where he maintained activity until 2002.

Dr. Harstine joined Friends University in 2002 as an assistant professor of religion, rising to the positions of an associate professor in 2005, and a full professor in 2012. He has contributed numerous articles to professional journals, and has served as the area editor for Christian Origins in the journal Religious Studies Review. Dr. Harstine is passionate about encouraging travel in order to foster the exchange of ideas and support continuing education. To remain aware of developments in his field, he is a member of the National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion, as well as the Society of Biblical Literature.
