Dr. Ronald T. Schuler was elected fellow of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers

Dr. Schuler retired from the University of Wisconsin-Madison after serving for 23 years as a professor of agricultural engineering and department chair (five years) and 3 years as professor and chair at University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Prior to joining the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, he held teaching appointments at the University of Minnesota (5 years) and North Dakota State University (6 years). Dr. Schuler, who earned all four degrees at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, notably excelled as a research assistant and instructor between 1965 and 1970 while pursuing his master's degree and doctorate. While at these universities, Dr. Schuler conducted research on sunflower seed drying, grain harvesting losses, conservation tillage, soil compaction and remote sensing of agricultural fields. He directed AgrAbility of Wisconsin (education and assistance to farmers with disabilities) from 1991-2007 and the National AgrAbility Project from 2000-2008.
An expert in agricultural machinery, after leaving the classroom, Dr. Schuler became general manager of Wisconsin Farm Technology Days, a role in which he served between 2008 and 2012. Earlier in his career, he served as the president of the Farm Health and Safety Council of Wisconsin from 1992 until 1994. In parleying the breadth of his scholarly knowledge In the field, Dr. Schuler co-authored book chapter 3 in "Displacement, Velocity, Acceleration and Sound" in Instrumentation and Measurement for Environmental Sciences 1975.
Dr. Schuler was commissioned in the U. S. Army in 1963 and served on active duty as an air defense artillery director until 1965 when was discharged from active duty as a First Lieutenant. He subsequently served an additional five years as company commander in the U. S. Army Reserves, reaching the rank of captain. A community leader for more than 30 years, he first contributed his expertise on the board of directors of the Kiwanis Club of Madison West between 1989 and 1992, as the president from 2008 to 2009 and secretary from 2013 to 2019. Dr. Schuler was also active with the Resource Center for Farmers with Disabilities in Madison from 1990 until 2007 and recently maintained activity as a leadership development coordinator for the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Kiwanis District from 2015 to 2019.
Born in Valders, WI, Dr. Schuler came of age on a farm where he learned a great deal regarding agriculture. As he attended high school, he recognized his own talent for mathematics, subsequently combined the two fields by pursuing his formal education in agricultural engineering. He holds a Bachelor of Science in agriculture and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, booth attained in 1963, and later acquired a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in agricultural engineering in 1967 and 1970, respectively. Dr. Schuler was a registered professional engineer in the state of North Dakota.
Dr. Schuler was elected fellow of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (now the Agricultural Society of Biological Engineers), Dr. Schuler chaired 12 of the society's committees, was elected to the President's Club in 1989 and received 10 Blue Ribbon Awards between 1985 and 1994. He is also a life member of the National Institute of Farm Safety (now International Society of Agricultural Safety) and the Asian Association of Agricultural Engineers and is a life member as well as the former chair of the machine committee of the Society of Automobile Engineers (SAE). The SAE honored Dr. Schuler with a Robert McFarland Award in 1998.
Recognized with several awards for his accomplishments, Dr. Schuler was recently named to the Wisconsin 4-H Hall of Fame for 2019. Other recognitions include a 2012 Kiwanis Hixson Award, 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award from Eastern Seals Wisconsin and a 1995 Second Mile Award from the Wisconsin Agricultural Agents. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Schuler has been included in the second edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
