Backed by 43 years of experience as a lawyer, Mr. Selden has distinguished himself in practice in some boutique firms and in his own firm, primarily as plaintiffs' counsel in construction defect and insurance bad faith cases, and for the last 11 years as General Counsel at Plaza Home Mortgage in San Diego, CA. Prior to embarking on his professional path, he obtained a BA degree in economics and political science from New York University in 1973, where he was also awarded the Founder's Day Award for academic achievement, and then his law degree (JD) from the University of Southern California, the Gould School of Law in 1976. Before his college years, Mr. Selden served in the United States Navy as a Quartermaster and a hard hat demolition and salvage diver, stationed for 4 years aboard an oceangoing salvage tug, from 1967 to 1971.
Since 2008, Mr. Selden has been in-house counsel at Plaza Home Mortgage, Inc., General Counsel since 2016. Plaza is a privately owned mortgage company that serves 50 states through wholesale, correspondent, and reverse mortgage lending production channels. Since 2000, Plaza has found success managing an extensive network of branches around the country, and weathering the financial meltdown that began in 2007. Mr. Selden began his financial services career during the meltdown aftermath, and adapted his prior legal experiences to the new financial services industry regulatory climate with ease.
Before joining Plaza, Mr. Selden tried more than 65 cases in federal and state courts, and argued before several federal and state appellate courts. He is a member of the US Supreme Court, the Federal Circuit Courts of Appeal of the Ninth, Seventh, and Third Circuits, and the California Supreme Court, as well as numerous federal District Courts throughout the country. He is licensed in California and was also a licensee of the State of Nevada for almost 20 years. Prior to Plaza, Mr. Selden was a regular lecturer to industry groups regarding various topics from construction defect law, homeowner association duties and responsibilities, and insurance bad faith. Since working at Plaza, he has been a panelist at several industry conferences discussing the role of in-house counsel in the financial services industry. Currently, he is affiliated with the William L. Todd American Inns of Court, Legion Lex of USC, and the Mortgage Bankers Association. His primary charitable contributions are to Wounded Warriors, the ACLU, and the USO. Recreationally, Mr. Selden rides a road bicycle, thousands of miles each year, for fitness and camaraderie. Looking to the future, Mr. Selden intends to continue working at Plaza to the best of his abilities and sees a well-deserved retirement in his not-too-soon future.
