Dr. Joseph John Westermeyer was given the R. Brinkley Smithers Distinguished Science Award by the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

With more than 45 years of professional experience, Dr. Westermeyer garnered a laudable reputation as the chief of psychiatry and the director of mental health at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center from 1993 to 2008, as a professor of psychiatry and as an adjunct professor of anthropology with the University of Minnesota from 1971 to the current time (2020). He also served as a professor and the chair of psychiatry and behavioral science at the Oklahoma University Medical Center from 1989 to 1992. At the University of Minnesota, Dr. Westermeyer was an associate professor from 1974 to 1978, an assistant professor from 1971 to 1974, and an instructor from 1970 to 1971.

From 1977 to 1989, Dr. Westermeyer found success as the founder and director of the international clinic, the program for alcohol and drug dependence, and the outpatient clinic for refugees from Southeast Asia at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and Clinics. He also served as the director of the medical student education department for the organization from 1976 to 1982, the founder and director of the day hospital from 1971 to 1973, and of the acute inpatient service from 1970 to 1972. Earlier in his career, Dr. Westermeyer became the deputy chief of public health for the Agency for International Development in Laos from 1965 to 1967 and he held a general medical practice at Payne Avenue Medical Clinic from 1962 to 1965.

Dr. Westermeyer first pursued an education with the University of Notre Dame and St. Thomas College, completing coursework from 1955 to 1957. He then joined the University of Minnesota, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry in 1959 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1961. He continued his studies with the school, earning a Master of Arts in anthropology in 1969, a Master of Public Health, and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1970. Dr. Westermeyer subsequently held a rotating internship with Saint Paul-Ramsey Hospital from 1961 to 1962 and a residency in psychiatry with the University of Minnesota from 1967 to 1970.

Due to his many contributions in the field, Dr. Westermeyer has been recognized numerous times for his contributions. The recipient of the Meritorious Service Award from the U.S. Agency for International Development, he was given the R. Brinkley Smithers Distinguished Science Award by the American Society of Addiction Medicine and the Booles-Rogers Award from the Metro Medical Foundation of Minnesota. Further, the Minnesota Psychiatric Society named Dr. Westermeyer as their Psychiatrist of the Year in 2008.
