Pringl Miller, MD, FACS, Celebrated for Dedication to Emergency General Surgery, Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Clinical Medical Ethics and Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education

Dr. Miller parlays her extensive knowledge to others through various roles advocating for gender equity in surgery and the integration of palliative medicine and surgical ethics into the care of surgical patients with serious illness.



    CHICAGO, IL, January 24, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Pringl Miller, MD, FACS, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Dedicated to optimal patient health and well-being, Dr. Miller excels as an attending practicing Surgery and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Her career milestones have culminated in a rare combination of clinical, administrative, and skills as an educator such that she is just one of seventeen board certified general surgeons in the country who is also board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine and fellowship trained in Clinical Medical Ethics. With these areas of expertise Dr. Miller is equipped to teach learners how to care for seriously ill and dying surgical patients some of whom will present sensitive ethical dilemmas. In her career, she has treasured teaching medical students, residents, and fellows at Rush University Medical Center, Catholic Health Initiatives, the University of California San Francisco, and Contra Costa Regional Medical Center. Originally, she embarked on her professional journey, by opening Pringl Miller, MD, FACS, PC a solo-private practice serving as the president and chief executive officer. Throughout her career, Dr. Miller has donated her time and expertise to various charitable organizations providing operative interventions to those in need via Operation Access, the World Surgical Foundation, and American College of Surgeons.

After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Illinois @ Chicago, Dr. Miller attended the University of Chicago - Pritzker School of Medicine and received her Doctor of Medicine degree. She subsequently, completed her internship and residency in general surgery at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at University of Chicago Medicine, and a fellowship in Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. In order to remain current and aware of developments in these fields, Dr. Miller is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and maintains a membership with the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. She has also maintained a membership with the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities. Devoted to gender equity in healthcare and surgery, Dr. Miller is a founding member of Time's Up Healthcare and the Founder of #WoSurgMeToo respectively.

Being a content expert, Dr. Miller served as the Guest Editor for the Surgical Clinics of North America edition on Practicing Primary Palliative Care. Dr. Miller was also the Symposium Editor for the Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics #MeToo in Surgery – Narratives by Women Surgeons. Due to her outstanding accomplishments, she was presented with the British Journal of Surgery Merit Award in 2001, the Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons Resident Achievement Award in 2002, a Teaching Excellence Award, Golden Scalpel Award, and Best Surgical Consultant Award from Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in 2008 and 2009 respectively, and the Hearst AAHPM Leadership Scholars Fund Scholarship in 2019. Dr. Miller was inducted into the Academy of Master Surgeon Educators as an Associate Member in 2019 and most recently was a nominee for the Women in Medicine #IStandByHer award.

Looking into the future, Dr. Miller aims to educate surgeons on the value of patient centered care and the practical integration of palliative medicine and surgical ethics into the care of seriously ill surgical patients. Additionally, it is her hope that meaningful changes take place in surgery so that women are treated with dignity, equity, and feel safe practicing in their respective workplaces.
